This [[Wikipedia:Citation templates|citation template]] is used to cite a Feature Detail Report from the [[Geographic Names Information System]] (GNIS) published by the [[United States Geological Survey]] (USGS).

* For Antarctic locations, specify {{para|type|antarid}}. Note: for these features, please use the latest IDs from nationalmap.gov, which have ID numbers >= 2800000.
* For [[Template:GNIS/doc#Retired data|features types retired in 2021]], specify {{para|type|retired}}.
* To disable links to the publisher, when the template is used multiple times in an article, use {{para|links|off}}
* Template accepts all parameters accepted by {{tl|cite encyclopedia}}, e.g., {{para|access-date}} or {{para|date}}
* Positional (unnamed) parameters are interpreted as <code><nowiki>{{cite gnis|id|name|access-date|date}}</nowiki></code>
