{{For|the template to cite the ''[[Online Etymology Dictionary]]''|Template:OEtymD}}
{{Documentation subpage}}
{{CS1 wrapper|base=cite encyclopedia}}

This template generates a citation for a particular term defined in the third (online) edition of the ''[[Oxford English Dictionary]]''.

== Usage ==
{{template link code|{{BASEPAGENAME}}|<var>headword</var>|<var>entry ID</var>}}

To retrieve the entry ID, click "Cite" at the <u>top</u> of the entry page and copy the 10-digit number after <code><nowiki>https://doi.org/10.1093/OED/</nowiki></code>. If the ID is absent, the headword is linked to the search results. The first and second parameters have aliases {{para|term}} and {{para|id}}, respectively.

Optionally, {{para|subentry}} or {{para|subsection}} may be used to refer to a specific part of the entry. These also have individual IDs, which can be found at by clicking "Cite" at the <u>bottom</u> of the section of the entry, or underneath each sense (meaning) in the "Meaning & use" section.

|{{{{BASEPAGENAME}}{{!}}A{{!}}7382069290{{!}}sense=I.1.{{!}}subid=1788655265}}
}}

Some entries, such as those that have been chosen as "the word of the day", are fully accessible to everyone. You may note this and suppress the indication of required subscription by setting {{para|access|free}}.

|{{{{BASEPAGENAME}}{{!}}ADA{{!}}6984906085{{!}}access=free}}
}}

For backwards compatibility, if the given ID is nine digits or less, the link uses the URL scheme that was used before the July 2023 overhaul of the ''OED'' site; existing links continue to work and do not need updating.
