I've been toying with using two gimballed small cannons on my Adder which I use for bounty hunting (NPCs). The damage they do is noticeable when they do hit, although they do hit less often. They seem to deal more solid damage to NPCs in larger ships. Sad part is the relatively low ammo count and of course even the gimballed versions aren't easy to hit with outside of quite short ranges.
