The Corvette sporting dual Plasma Accelerators isn't actually a stupid choice all told. What's necessary though is to be flying with out flight assist, along with being very skilled at ship handling. In that case the Corvette becomes a monster burst damage dealer and can take down any other super heavy with a few well placed shots. This is why the other Federation Core Dynamics ships work the way they do as well. They're all god awful with flight assist active, but when you turn it off, you get a lot more out of the ships. They all compliment the Corvette very well on top of that. So those ships are made to support the Corvette, while also being a good means of teaching you how to fly Federation combat ships. Since they all work best with flight assist off.
