It is one of the largest known stars in the galaxy as well as one of the most luminous of its type. It has a radius of approximately 1,420 solar radii (990,000,000 km; 6.6 au), and is located 1,832 light-years from [[Sol]].<ref name=":0">[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VY_Canis_Majoris VY Canis Majoris Wikipedia]</ref>

VY Canis Majoris is a single star categorized as a semiregular variable with an estimated period of 2,000 days. It has an average density of 5 to 10 mg/m3. If placed at the center of the Solar System, VY Canis Majoris's surface would extend beyond the orbit of [[Jupiter]], although there is still considerable variation in estimates of the radius.<ref name=":0" />
