I made ~24 million in a single exploration trip in an Asp, and jumped ranks from Surveyor to Ranger one after the other, immediately.

Although I did get kinda lucky and discover a few neutron stars and was first discoverer of lots of systems with earthlike planets, I'm not sure that whether was a bug in the game, or I got lucky to have done it at a point before they nerfed exploration. Since then, I've never made quite as much money on a single trip.
