Why do I need the auto field maintenance unit for long distances exploration traveling? I will rather be a bit more cautious and have a larger jump range because this reduces travel time a lot considering hundreds or even thousands of jumps.

The same applies to shields and weapons: You won't see a single pirate once you are more than 500-1000 LY out. Danger awaits you if you come back. You don't want to fight them, you just want to escape, so what you actually need is a very fast escape: Good thrusters and power distributor and no extra weight on your ship. And the latter fits well with your goal to increase jump range.

What I'm not sure about are the sensors. You will need some sensors to scan the planets and stars, but I actually did not notice any difference between class A and class F sensors. Class A sensors are as awful slow as class F, I mean.

And large fuel tanks are mandatory.
