It still has the firepower of a FAS/Chieftain while being significantly faster, and having stronger shields.
It's larger size compared to its Federal and Alliance counterparts makes it an easier target on paper, and the lateral thrusters are too weak to make this ship a turn fighter, but the aforementioned speed, and shields make it a great hit and run attacker and mixed tank with enough space for over 64 tons (123 if you use a class 6 shield), an SRV and limpets.
Overall not as great in a fight as the more specialised Assault Ship or Chieftain, but it holds its own as almost an equal while retaining multipurpose capabilities the other two can only dream of, and with engineering it's an incredibly potent and viable main ship - not for me, granted, since I'm not an Imperial fan, but still.
