Please take note of the complete lack of visible oxygen tanks on the pilot's suit. The fact that they have tanks small enough to be completely concealed but still carry 25 minutes is pretty good (but they could ditch aesthetics for practicality) and those airlock shields *probably* require power and projectors. Having them on every window would be difficult.
The ship's shields "convert matter into light" (somehow), they don't stop it, and having ALL matter converted would make them opaque (like when a shot hits). Also they are one way to allow the ship's own projectiles (and consequently the oxygen) to leave.
