I use prospector limpets more like darts i tag rocks with. I shoot one, lock onto it, shoot another and wait till the first one hits, when it does, i decide whether or not i like the composition then move on to the second one i shot. I repeat this as i am flying to the roids themselves to not waste time... i find they travel round 150m/s or 175m/s so u can actaully travel faster than them. The key to all this is multiple prospector limpets allow you to see exactly what you are getting into before you need to get close enough to mine a chunk. while u may need to carry more limpets to do this, it is entirely worth it.

they don't blow up out of nowhere... u somehow have to strategically break off chunks so they do not hit the roid when they do their fly by. i find the smaller roids all less prone to this and large, lop sided roids spinng fast to the be hardest in this respect.

I use a python now... i have 128 units of cargo space i typically fill to the brim with only 60 limpets.. i use 3 mining med lasers that turn to 2 when i run low on energy. It is fast enough, has enough space and can use 8 collecting limpets and 2 prospector limpet controllers all while having amazing shields and 2 class 3 beam lasers... i can defend myself against most any pirate ship and win handidly. do that in a small light ship...

ok... so as a combat ship you need to focus on keeping it light and getting A grade thrusters and keeping everything either C or upgrading to A. The few things u can keep at D like jump drive and environmental systems also helps.. do all this and u can get a great fighter out of it. The shields are beast when u put bi-weave 6 and 3 A boosters. I load mine out as follows;

L1: Beam laser 3 (gimb or fixed)

L2: Beam laser 3 (gimb or fixed)

L3: Multicannon 2 (gimb)

M1: Multicannon 2 (gimb)

M2: Multicannon 2 (gimb)

The purpose for this is to keep it light weight while allowing the best possible burst dps and the beams allow for sustained shield dropping capabilities. The tripple multi's shred the hull while allowing the energy to recharge. Once multi's reload, use beams again. If u happen to find a shieldless target with everything loaded and recharges... let it all out, drop em like a fly.

I do this because i want to mine or run cargo with it as well... being a multipurpose ship, i hate being forced to do one thing. Buying an FDL for a single purpose or two seperate ships (one for mining, one for combat) means poorer versions of each.. so i do this and refit as necessary.

Using a federal drop ship i can get 120-ish pieces of high quality metal in about 20-25 minutes... usually 1.3-2mil a trip and i can make on average 2-3 trips in an hour.. you do the math. How fast can you do that in a small ship with minimal power distrubutor or slots for collector limpets? Larger internal compartments = more collector/prospector limpets as well as cargo space and even shields if you budget well.

It's simple... take 2/3rd's of your cargo as limpets and use your prospectors to find the best roids, mine them using medium lasers (with a good power distr. u can tap out a roid in a single go) and use 4-5 collectors to rape the fragments into your cargo hold. If you can get a 10 slot refinery on a metallic belt, you never need to worry about ejecting unwanted minerals. To top it all off, while your limpets are finishing collecting shards, you start to prospect near-by roids.

As the article says... it is a good way to learn ship control for new players. What better way to learn how a drifty box like a really large ship than to take it into an asteroid ring around a planet? I can personally say i have never lost a Drop ship to hitting an asteroid.
