This is quite possibly the worst ship in the game - it's an expensive, fancier Type 6 that trades almost everything good about a T6 for two extra hardpoints.

It has less module slots, hideously reduced speed, abysmal pitch radius (which is essential to any combat vessel), worse than even a Type 6, pathetic armor (outgunned by any other medium vessel) and is entirely reliant on a fighter that saps 10% of all income when the only thing they do in game is fly a fighter, and requires you to spend hours training them up to make them even remotely effective?

Sure, you can still have fun with it and make it do stuff, but both in game mechanics and in-universe sense, this thing is garbage. I've tried my damndest to make it good. But it's not. It's just garbage. The design philosophy of FDev when making different versions of ships is to nerf blindly and then add some gimmicks to them.

How do you make a support combat vessel with barely a small ship's weapon load out, that can't maneuver to kill smaller ships, that doesn't have the firepower to knock out heavier ships, and literally have less potential for options than even a Type 6?

A type 6 can excel in Exploring or Trading. A Keelback has less modules, so it's gimped in both that, but that also limits its armor capacity, or cargo capacity, and general multirole functionality, all for what, two extra hardpoints and a fighter?

I cannot get over how great the design is when the ship is unashamedly awful. It doesn't excel in anything. There is no niche for it. Just a pure disappointment in execution.

The system itself is far from perfect but anyone who thinks this was a bad change is out of their minds. The majority of "pack" purchases were designed for you to spend MORE money than you ever would as opposed to individually buying a single skin. What cost 4-8 dollars in the past now costs a dollar and change, so even if you're looking at half the skins in a pack you're still paying less than before. You LITERALLY wasted more money beforehand. Shit's not rocket science. Packaged items are literally designed for you to spend more than you wanted in the "idea" that you got more for your money when all that matters to the company is you spent more money, regardless of what they gave you. This allows you to spend 4 bucks, get 3 different things you want, as opposed to spending 12 bucks and getting the same 3 things but getting 9 different skins you'll never use.

I guarantee the majority of skin packs bought in this game on an individual basis are never used because there's only a couple that people desire out of them. Them's the breaks.

Sorry, but lack of understanding economization/business doesn't mean you get to armchair dev or invoke emotional responses into this. If you honestly think that this change is anything but an improvement for players in general you're out of your minds. On a net average basis, the player will spend less per part they want by the nature of individually buying components as opposed to packs. This in turn also means there's a lower barrier of entry where arx acts as a universal currency where "extras" can be utilized elsewhere.

Also, Arx Packs are 4-8 usd for the lowest tiers, and combined with actual attainable currency (if you actually play the game) everything is that much more attainable.

This is the system that has worked in warframe since before Elite even came out, and it's nearly the exact same concept here. I will concede the rise in price of laser and engine colors are the one casualty of this change, but it is quite literally the only component.

The rest of the whining is a result of people looking to skewer FDev for anything they possibly can.

This ship used to be an ideal goal, now it's just a poor "stepping stone" vessel.

Multirole has become a joke unless the ships are literally superior to everything else on the market, because of poor game design balance. 2.1 introduced engineers which made NPCs not only significantly spongier, but also designed to ignore any damage and do nothing but focus fire on the player. This meant that the asp's bulk, low shielding, poor thrust control, and weak power distributor leaves it a poor ship for combat. Because engineering only scales up from a ship's baseline, the weakened combat baseline means it's that much more vulnerable even with engineering to compensate.

It still held the role of an ideal explorer because of its general cost and high jump ranges, but has now been utterly superceded by the vastly superior Krait line of ships which are not only extremely fast for their size, but have absurd amounts of firepower, cargo space, and combat capabilities all while carrying more than before with even more room in their hold.

Previous multiroles like the Cobra and Python suffered from several notable weaknesses, either having a lack of speed, maneuverability, jump range, or otherwise, for their class size.

The kraits have now superceded all of these ships in all but raw trade capacity.

Very poorly balanced vessels with Elite's current design iteration. Trading manually for profit is pitiful money with small cargo vessels, while missions always seem to provide missions that require carrying multiple times what's capable of being carried in your vessel. Even the recent changes to slots mean that most smaller medium ships are now left in the gutter for utility compared to the raw amount of slots some small ships have (+2 1 size slots) for novelty.

Sad to say the Asp isn't that great for combat, nor mission running, nor trading. There are smaller vessels that are lighter, cheaper, and have more flexible slots.

An important distinction: the new arx system is extremely cheap. Like legitimately one of the most competitive in the market as far as what you get compared to the horrendeous pricing in the first several years of this game (until 2018 IIRC). Yes, the livery system is very far from perfect, but as it stands this is a great step forward in making income more acessible for FDev and content cheaper for players.

In a more perfect world cosmetics would part of actual in game purchases with customization, but that's not the case.

The fact one can earn ARX is good in it of itself, and while I agree the quantity/rate of gain is rather small in its current state, it still opens up options for players and can shave off the need to buy another bracket of ARX with actual money. It is not strictly designed to let you acquire every cosmetic for free, which would be ludicrous IMHO. However there are still improvements needed, such as the need (IMHO) to break down ship kits into their individual components to be bought individually.

Ultimately the game isn't about farming ARX, and I say that as someone who has literally done everything they have wanted in the game, never touched a credit meta, and has every large vessel in the game and never "grinded" or experienced excessive annoyance at progressing in the game, slow or fast.

I don't expect wikia comments to have much weight but I think it's worth tossing this here before people who have 0 idea of what goes into game design, economy, monetization, and a business, start whining about it.

If you're a poor enough pilot that you're losing shields in a vulture outside of contexts like having multiple ships engaging you, you are doing something wrong.

"Tanking" is a fake concept generated by the abstraction of video game mechanics in older MMOs where tanking was based around aggro management. However, most combat in Elite is single player against multiple ships. If you merely fly backwards and hold down the trigger you're flying horrifically and deserve to lose your ship.

Tanking is therefore a fundamentally incorrect concept. The Vulture is nigh unkillable in 1 v 1 PVE in the right hands due to its superior maneuverability and great sustained firepower.

If you're losing your cockpit, that literally means you spent enough time staring at the turrets shooting at you. I have literally never lost my cockpit to stray gunfire, ever. Damaged, absolutely, but never have I been in a situation where it was so poor that you literally exposed a tiny, low armored ship to such gunfire.

This ship is more than a match for small and some medium ships, but weak against bigger vessels with huge armor.

Man, Elite does some really dumb shit for all these small minor numbers. Like on one hand they don't matter much but simultaneously why do they go so far out of their way to fucking penalize you so much for it.

Wow, to think I took a break off of elite before april only to find out they added a lot of small module slots to all ships. That really changes the game for the better and adds so much more flexibility in every vessel. Hands down one of the best changes I've read in this game period.
