Being gimballed isn't a massive advantage for the cannon. Because of the projectile speed, you have to be pretty close up to fire it and hit. The real butcher's work of this thing is done up close, but it also happens to a bit better against smaller craft than railguns or plasma accelerators are.

I bet its not. Imagine being able to take down shields efficiently with one small weapons slot, and fill the rest of your slots with projectile weapons great at chewing up armour and destroying modules. Such a thing might be overpowered.
