Although fast, maneuverable and well armed, the Fer-De-Lance suffers from a few major drawbacks, which include a poor FSD jump range, a limited number of internal compartments for its size and until v1.5/2.0 an undersized powerplant. As of v1.5/2.0, the '''Fer-De-Lance '''now has a class 6 power plant module instead of the under-performing class 5. .

The weapon hard points are located as follows: Two top mounted Class 2 medium hardpoints on the nose about 1/4 of the way back from the tip, Two side mounted Class 2 medium hardpoints at about the ship's midpoint, and One bottom mounted Class 4 huge hardpoint between 1/2 and 2/3rds back from the front tip.

The Fer-De-Lance has different heat radiator animations for general heat dissipation and Frame-Shift Drive charge up for hyperspace. While both feature the animation of the same yellow/orange lighted radiators, the Frame-Shift Drive charging animation also features blue lighted radiators and two blue beams. The blue beams are projected from slightly behind the cockpit and are visible from the cockpit from the side windows on both sides.

With its 792T cargo capacity it has the largest cargo bay a playable ship can have, topping the Type-9 with 260T more cargo space, over 48% more space, while having significantly better shields and speed than the Type-9. This will make it the most logical choice for traders.

Unlike the Type-9, it is extremely well-shielded, very fast (though not maneuverable) for its size, and reasonably well-armed, giving it far greater survivability and allowing some limited use of it as a combat ship, especially in the piracy role. In addition, with plenty of internals available to mount mining accessories while still leaving the largest open for cargo holds, excellent speed for moving from asteroid to asteroid, and a sufficiency of class 2 weapon mounts, the Cutter is unquestionably the best mining ship yet.

The design philosophy reflects Imperial sensibilities as it is faster and more elegant than the corvette, but doesn't quite match it in firepower. As with other Imperial warships the cutter is also used for projecting soft power, via diplomatic missions and support for friendly powers. The Cutter features 4 medium [[hardpoint]]s: 2 on the nacelles and 2 on the belly; 2 large hardpoints on top of the ship and 1 huge hardpoint on the chin. Notably, the exterior lights on the ship change color from blue to red once hardpoints are deployed.

With its 792T cargo capacity it has the largest cargo bay a playable ship can have, topping the Type-9 with 260T more cargo space, over 48% more space, while having significantly better shields and speed than the Type-9. This will make it the most logical choice for traders.

Unlike the Type-9, it is extremely well-shielded, very fast (though not maneuverable) for its size, and reasonably well-armed, giving it far greater survivability and allowing some limited use of it as a combat ship, especially in the piracy role. In addition, with plenty of internals available to mount mining accessories while still leaving the largest open for cargo holds, excellent speed for moving from asteroid to asteroid, and a sufficiency of class 2 weapon mounts, the Cutter is unquestionably the best mining ship yet.
