To be fair, we're talking about a fictional universe where the USA managed to shoot down nuclear weapons with their laser defense grid. While the Boeing YAL-1 is a thing that does exist, best estimates say it could shoot down 10-14 ICBMs in the time it takes them to travel over the poles. Given the Russian arsenal is well over a thousand warheads and I believe there's only 2 YAL-1's, we'd have to either put those into extreme mass production in the next 23 years, which isn't likely, or else we'd have to develop FAR more powerful laser batteries on the ground, for which we'd also have to nearly double the entire combined power output of the US electrical grid to power them, and change the lenses out every few shots as only chemical lasers could hope to have that much power, but they'll burn out their lenses too fast even then.

Also, the technology to clean up radiation AT ALL does not exist. This is a common misunderstanding because virtually every sci-fi has some sort of "anti-radiation" measure, usually a chemical like Fallout's RadAway. IRL, radiation cannot simply be cleaned up. You can slow down the rate at which it radioactive isotipes decay by surrounding them with iodine, which is why iodine wash is commonly used in irradiated areas, but the tradeoff is that while the rate of rads being thrown off decreases, the time it takes it to decay increases, essentially making the area less radioactive, but for much longer. In any case, nothing that exists today can delete radiation from existance.

In other words, this is based entirely on a universe that everyone just assumed would exist in 2040 back when the first Elite came out in 1984. And as we know now, humanity has spead up development of certain technologies and slacked off in others, often because we've hit a wall. With both SDI and anti-radiation treatments, we've hit walls that are going to require a "miracle moment" like penacillin before we can solve those problems. Given how much the threat of nuclear war has decreased with the fall of the USSR, odds aren't good that we'll fine either solution soon.

So yes, it would take more than 30 years to clean up the mess because the technology to clean it up probably still won't exist in 30 years from right now. But it's fiction based on projections that were optimistic in 1984 at best. Not sure what you expect man.

One thing that I did not see mentioned on this page: engines! When landing on a planet, take note of the gravity. Lower-tier engines may not be able to get you back 1,000m or more so that you can engage your FSD, meaning you're totally stuck there, and they may also make it impossible for you to stop before slamming into the surface, often insta-killing your ship.

On this note, I want to point out that the Dolphin can mount Class 5 thrusters despite its miniscule weight. This makes it far more suitable for landing on high gravity worlds than anything else on the "recommended ships" list above. In addition, it is also the only ship listed that mounts a Class 4 FSD (besides the Hauler, which I believe has a Class 3 FSD) which means it will use far less fuel per jump than all the ships that require a Class 5 or 6 FSD. In my case, I have mine outfitted with a Class 5 Guardian FSD Booster and a Class 4A Fuel Scoop, and it is still able to top off the tank faster than I can circle the star for the next jump, but of course you are free to lose 1.2ly if you'd prefer a Class 5 scoop.

Regardless of what ship you fly, just make sure you don't underrate your engines too hard. There's no amount of AFMU repairs that will save you from an impact over 300m/s!

I recently finished Distant Worlds 2 and took a Krait for the voyage. I've always loved the Krait, but the one down side was that it's a rather large ship, even for a medium pad ship, so planetary landings were often a PITA. I had to park over 1km away on multiple occaisions. I've used a DBX before too, but the DBX is very limited in how much it can do. That is, it's either an explorer, or a combat ship, never both. It just can't do 2 things at once.

So...I started hunting for a solid exploration ship that can actually still perform another role. I built a combat-focued Imperial Courier (2k shields, 653 boost, and still does respectable damage) and decided I wanted an explorer that could make money. Enter the Dolphin. Here's my build: https://s.orbis.zone/3gx4

It makes enough on single-hop VIP missions to easily pay for a rebuy (for either ship) and still maintains almost 54ly jump range for exploration. The Class 5 Thrusters (on a small, lightweight ship) really shine on high-gravity worlds where many exploration builds would flounder, and the fuel scoop is more than sufficient to top off the tank without making a stop for it (deep scooping easily fills it up in the time it takes to circle to the next jump point.) Lastly, the shields are good enough to keep it alive long enough to GTFO, and the drag frags give you a little more breathing space when under attack - though the Dolphin is good enough at evading interdiction that you really shouldn't ever need them.

It's the perfect exploration ship that can still make other money on the side.

I have 2 class 2 rails and 2 class 3 turreted beams on my Krait Phantom, and I have 2 tips for everyone:

1) Thermal Vent on beam lasers will totally negate the heat generated by Ralilguns allowing you to fire rails non-stop.

2) Plasma Slug on class 2 rails gives you several hundred shots and a MUCH cheaper reload (or free reload with a fuel scoop) and makes them viable for very long trips away from rearm without synthesis. With the 32t tank on the Phantom, I fired over 280 shots per rail (with 2 rails) in a medium res last week and still had 2/3 of a tank of fuel.

Also as a bonus tip, if you're like me and not the best at aiming, but you want a larger ship than one of the Diamondbacks, the Krait Phantom has a much, much better turn rate than the Krait MkII. As much as I want to keep my SLF, using the Phantom makes putting and keeping rails on target at least twice as easy. I cannot recommend the Phantom highly enough as a railgun platform.

The thing about heavier armor - which, again, I'd argue the SLF largely negates that anyway - is that you have to see what weapons would penetrate the armor on a Python vs. a Krait. Python is 65 hull hardness, Krait is 55. By my count, that means Class 3 Cannons would penetrate the Krait but not the Python and...that's it. Like, there's literally nothing else in that range.

And good luck hitting a Krait with even Gimballed Cannons at anything beyond point-blank range. Cannons are basically 90% inaccurate past 600m.

Of course, on a Vulture with High Yield, they'd be a nightmare for a Krait. But I can't see a single other ship or configuration in the entire game that could make serious use of them, and that's a Vulture build nobody will use due to ammo reasons.

I know both of these comments predate the release of the Krait Phantom but I'll just say that the "best" exploration ship - assuming we use "longest range" as the absolute #1 metric is really the Phantom. While it might come in around 0.6ly lower than the DBX (though still better than an AspX) it can mount a Class 6 Fuel Scoop. In practice, this makes it the best balance between jump range and scoop time, which is comparatively rather long on a DBX with a Class 4 scoop. In other words, it may not QUITE jump farther, but the Phantom will jump faster.

That said, the Conda is still king if you want to achieve 65ly+ and still bring everything you need with you. There are many ships now that can easily make their way into that club with nothing more than Farseer tinkering with your FSD and some D-rated modules, but only the Conda can do it comfortably.

I'm doing Distant Worlds 2 in my Phantom now but I had a Conda at one point, and every time my SRV gets stuck on geometry or I want to go do a canyon race in a SLF or I want to carry some cargo AND still have room for SRV and SLF and mining gear, I wish I was back in my Conda.

And no, the Conda is menuverable ENOUGH in Supercruise to easily deep scoop even blue-white stars. It's no Krait in that department, but it's more than you need to scoop and scoot.

The number of jumps you can eek out per fuel tank is irrelevant because the Conda can mount a class 7 fuel scoop, and at best you can do a class 5 in the AspX or a class 4 in the DBX, and realistically you're probably putting a class 4 in the AspX too because you need to burn your one and only class 5 optional internal slot on a Guardian FSD Booster.
In other words, the Conda can scoop so much faster it completely negates the larger fuel consumption.
The only time this is relevant, ever, is if you plan so poorly that you fly 4 jumps away from a fuel star without noticing your fuel or your route You've got to be either extremely inattentive, extremely unlucky, extremely bad at using the in-game route plotter, or all of the above to do something like that.
And if that happens, look on the bright side: you're in an Anaconda. The Fuel Rats are going to have no problem whatsoever spotting your huge ship from a long way off.

Basically, yes. Being able to land on medium pads means less time spent filling up cargo hold while running cargo missions. Given that every single mission is just 1 jump, time spent waiting on new missions to propogate is time utterly wasted.

In this case, having more cargo in a Conda is actually less profitable because it means any time you can't quickly fill it, you're left either wasting time waiting on more missions, or running with a half-empty hold. (Or filling it with random comodities making 1/100th as much money.) The nice thing about 280t Python is you can always, ALWAYS find enough missions to fill it within 20t of capacity in a single board refresh.

I would agree with you about 99% of this. The one thing I will say is that having a single corrosive MC is a good idea when using Class 1 cannons. Why? Because the armor piercing on class 1 weapons is so low. However, with the combination of class 1 cannons and a single class 1 corrosive MC (for example, 2 cannons and 1 MC on an Eagle) your AP goes up enough to pierce ships like the DBX, where it otherwise wouldn't.

And if you put High Yield on the cannons, every single shot is going to damage multiple modules. You can do insane amounts of damage to internals this way.

I have no idea as I've not used Frag Cannons. I'm not great at keeping my nose on targets so I figured anything with such a short firing window is a bad idea for me. Now if a Frag Cannon was available on a SLF then that would be freaking amazing...

Of course, there is one other option for all of this: get your own Krait. Given that literally EVERY internal and all weapons will transfer and the Krait is I believe 8mil cheaper, anyone who owns a Python can very easily swap to a Krait. The difference in price is enough to cover 2 rebuys, usually.

I've only been playing since July, but even so I've spent easily half my time in my Krait and I don't regret it. I find myself occaisionally swapping to a Python when I need more money to afford another A-rated component but I always come back to the Krait. That said, just remember that anyone who HAS a Python can immediately switch to a Krait and you won't lose anything in the process (except swapping a couple cargo bays for a fighter hanger which should cover about 60% of the fighter bay's cost. A class 5 bay is only around 500k.)

On the other hand, it is entirely within even a novice pilot's ability (like me) to compensate for it when doing non-combat activities. Docking, landing on planets, mining, etc are all very, very easy. In combat an AspX will get owned very fast despite the number of hardpoints (unless you're up against really weak NPCs and using turrets) but for any non-combat scenario, it's more manuverable than it really has to be.

That said, if you really can't handle it, you could always sacrifice 4t of cargo space for a Docking Computer. Even though I have zero issues with it myself, I run one just because I'm lazy. (That, and the computer is WAY faster than I could ever be at outposts. Stations it's about the same speed as me but again, I'm lazy.) Due to the large number of internal bays, you can mount one without any real drawback. Unlike, say, the DBX (which I still love) where you just don't have the slots to spare for one.

All-in-all, it does feel more sluggish than a ship of this tonnage with these engines should be, but if you can't reliably dock it, the problem is the pilot, not the ship.

Keep in mind the sluggish handling is probably for balance reasons. If one ship could easily do everything the AspX does AND keep 4 fixed or gimballed weapons on target, it'd be the most OP ship in the game. It has to have SOME downside.

My DBX runs a Large Gimballed Beam Laser and 2 Medium Seeker Missiles. I can take down Expert-and-lower pirate lords reliably with 90% or better hull remaining and miniscule module damage. The DBX has rather weak shields, but the low cost means a very cheap Military Composite armor upgrade, combined with Hull and Module reinforcements and I'm rocking over 900 hull strength with great resistances, and still have dual scanners and a 32ly jump range with a rebuy under 800k.

In short:

DBX = Combat/Explorer hybrid that's the best explorer in the game and above-average in combat.

Vulture = Pure Combat ship and probably the only light ship in a dogfight that can reliably defeat a DBX. It also sounds like a Corvette which is enough reason to own one alone.

AspEx = Trader/Explorer hybrid that's the second best explorer in the game and on par with a Krait, Python, or Type-6 as a cargo ship but better jump range than any of them. Easily the weakest offensive capability of any of these, though.

Keelback = Flying bathtub that makes a decent trader or an excellent miner but is most useful as the cheapest way to launch SLFs. As soon as you can afford it, you should get a Keelback solely to try out SLFs because not everyone likes them, but if you do, you need to start saving money for the Krait ot Alliance Challenger.

Krait, Python, etc = ships that really shouldn't be directly compared to the DBX (because they're too different) but all of which you should look at eventually. Still, the DBX makes an excellent stepping stone to any of those, or also to an AspEx.

One more little side note: the Krait and the DBX both mount Class 5 FSD's so if you're considering a Krait, that's one less thing to buy if you already bought one for this puppy.

I've found that the fastest way to complete an interdiction - regardless of which party you are - is not to try ti sit your reticle on the target, but to sweep it back and fourth over the target. I think you get more progress on the progress bar the instant you reach the target than you do for keeping it there.
Entirely possible I'm hallucinating this, though. I am pretty new.

Just a little tip I've learned after 10 days of play: Silent Running can save your life.

When in solo mode, as a trader, you will get followed by evemies about one cargo run out of 10-15 or so. They usually spawn in when you jump to the destination system. When this happens, do the following:

1) Make sure your throttle is at 100%.
2)After you're turned away from the sun, ignore your heading for a moment.
3) Enable Silent Running
4) Immediately go into your modules and disable EVERYTHING except Engines and FSD. Yes, even life support. You will re-enable it in less than 5 minutes or be dead before then anyway.
5) Turn towards your destination.
6) Go into contacts and target the NPC. He should be listed by name as long as he recently taunted you in chat.
7) Untarget him as soon as you can remember which pip he is.
8) Lock your eyes on your radar and wait until he's off the radar.
9) As soon as he is, disable Silent Running.
10) Ta-da, evaded!

Basically, Supercruise speed is based primarily around how long you've been moving. As long as you don't lock a target and keep the throttle at max, you will outrun the NPC. Remember that you almost always cannot outrun NPCs before they kill you in normal space, but in Supercruise, your speeds are the same, affected only by who accelerated first. Make sure it's you!

Silent Running helps because it drastically reduces the range at which he can target, and thus the range he can interdict you at. This is critical because if you get Interdicted, you ARE going to die (unless/until you have a heavy ship of your own.) The Interdiction mini-game isn't that hard, but it takes some practice to nail it down. Personally, I recommend that you put a FSD interdictor on a SIdewinder and practice being the Interdictor rather than the Interdictee. The game is the same but the risk on failure is minimal this way. Until then, Silent Running will save your bacon over and over.

Which is important because it's amazng how many NPC bounty hunters have Anacondas, Railguns, and 100% perfect aim. No really.
