It's a great entry level ship for mining, cargo hauling, or smuggling; not quite as cheap as a Hauler, but bigger and better armed, and it's not pirate bait the way some other cargo ships are.

I also think it's just plain fun to fly. It's pretty light on the controls and small enough that you can throw it in and out of the mail slot with wild abandon; just watch out for those wingtips. Plus there's something satisfying about the snarl of the thrusters echoing off the inside of a station when you chop the throttle back. If you dock a bit hard, repairs are cheap. I rarely approach at less than 200 m/s in this thing...which also makes it good for smuggling, since you can zip inside before there's time for a scan to complete.

This is also a pretty damn quick ship over long distances if you really strip it down, although a Hauler will beat it in the "budget Buckyballer" category.

It's not as bad as all that.

The most glaring problem is the shield generator it comes with is undersized. You need a class 5 unit for near-optimal shields, but it comes with a class 4. I'm running a 5C Bi-Weave and that's working pretty well for me; by the time it's down I'm usually almost ready to high-wake out, and if not it comes back up pretty fast. A 5A would also be good, depends on your style.

Max out the thrusters and fit a good power distributor and you can boost at 330 m/s almost continuously when unloaded, around 300 loaded. Maybe not an "18 wheeler on steroids," but most fighters will have to put four pips to ENG to keep up, which means taking power away from their guns.

Defensively I recommend a chaff launcher and two point defenses -- one on the top midpoint utility mount, one on the bottom. (One doesn't cut it because the superstructure blocks a big chunk of its line of sight.) If you want to give them something to think about while they follow you, mount a couple turreted pulse lasers on the top and bottom gun mounts. Size 1 pulse lasers will run for a while just on the charge in your power distributor. Won't do much damage but might force them to divert power to SYS.

(There's a theme here. Small fighters have severe power management issues compared to big freighters. They can't run everything at once. Every watt you make them expend on speed or shielding is one they can't throw at you in the form of a laser beam.)

On the whole it flies better than it looks. It certainly handles better than my Federal Dropship, although both make my Type-6 look sprightly by comparison.

I pretty much agree with your conclusions.

I use one primarily for mining and it's well suited to that role, especially in less secure systems. It can fit a medium mining laser and still mount enough other weaponry to take down an Eagle in one pass. With careful module selection you can have 64t of cargo space and good enough collector and refinery modules to fill it reasonably quickly.

If equipped with an FSD interdictor and a hatch breaker controller it's also not bad for doing powerplay privateer duty. Logistics ships seem to mostly be Cobra Mk.III and this stands up to them well.

I think my biggest complaint about it is the jump range. It's just awful once you've got a useful loadout on the ship. If it had longer legs it'd be a lot more useful. It also tends to run hot while fuel scooping, but now that heat sink launchers work in supercruise it's not as much of a problem.

Armor is excellent; I rarely get module malfunctions even at low hull percentages. I call mine the Bullet Sponge. ;) Lots of power on tap, too, you can pretty much load it up how you want and run everything at once without problems.

I'm starting to think this might make a really good mining ship, especially as a step up from a Type-6.

Consider:

- More internal compartment capacity than a T6; can hold twice the cargo while still holding my preferred loadout of a class 4 refinery, class 5 collector limpet controller, and class 1 prospector limpet controller.

- Medium hardpoints instead of the T6's small.

- A power coupling that can support firing mining lasers continuously.

- Fits on a medium pad, so docking at outposts is still possible.

Neither of the larger freighters looks as good; the T7 has more hardpoints but the same power coupling as the T6, making those extra hardpoints useless for mining lasers; and the T9 is impractically large and costs five times as much (not to mention being a magnet for pirates.)

This is all theory right now, as I don't have the required rank yet, but it looks good on paper.

A Sidewinder would be even cheaper, but it takes forever to get anywhere in a Sidewinder. Strip a Hauler down and add a 2A FSD and you can do 25+ ly per jump. Covers ground pretty fast. Even with the FSD upgrade you're looking at less than 30K cr in depreciation when you sell it back.
