This is what i'm thinking, extremely limited bounties on extreme griefers, bounties should go up to fractions of ship costs and accelerate past rebuy after repeat offenses.

"The problem is that the whole online environment is not roleplay friendly. Just an example: Do you really think that authorities would turn a blind eye while transports carrying hundreds of refugees from a burning starport get shot down one by one? You can argue about "powerplay" and "faction allegiance" all you want but this is nonsense. That's what I mean by repercussions. People killing hundreds of people and getting what, a few thousand credits bounty on their head? yeah... "

Bounties in sci fi get insane, and in real life sometimes they go up into the tens of thousands of dollars. IE enough to actually buy a vehicle. In star wars there are a few instances in which the bounty on someones head is enough for them to be extremely rich for the rest of their lives.

"In real life, griefers get fucked. "

comonly, not always. but we do have systems and laws in place to deal with the worst offenders. I totally agree that if you are going to have penalties for people who take advantage of game systems (and the lack thereof) to survive then you should have penalties in place for people who use other game systems ( and the lack therof) to harass other players.

Does it makes sense for an entire group of people who have organized themselves in such a way to get away with what they want to be able to do so? yes, it does, in real life thats called organized crime. When a single individual is a victim of something like this they generally report it to the police, or flee. a response like: " If you can't handle the consequences of open play then don't use it.. Simple as that. Until then don't make excuses for cheating/hacking. " sounds like someone that would be suggesting victims just leave.

I personally think Elite is very cool, and i have suffered playing against people using lag switches in exploitable pvp games before. but DC'ing through a menu when you are repeatadly targeted by griefers hardly seems like an offense when the other side of that spectrum is not addressed at all.

Going into open space where pvp is possible is not the same as going into a battle areana where the only point is combat, and i'm not saying people should just be able to turn pvp on and off at will. but if you are going to punish people trying to protect themselves then you should definately have a long look at why they are doing it.
