{{Quote|A modified version of the Alliance Chieftain, the Alliance Challenger has been envisaged as a frontline combat vessel. == Overview ==
For owners of the Alliance Chieftain looking for a similar ship with added firepower and durability, the Alliance Challenger delivers. The Challenger trades one large hardpoint for two additional medium hardpoints, increasing its overall damage output in combat. The Challenger also boasts reconfigured internal compartments, including one additional Class 6 slot, increasing its cargo capacity to 152t over the Chieftain's 120t. Although the Challenger's upgrades come with a higher purchase price than the Chieftain, it is still substantially cheaper than a number of other medium vessels, such as the Federal Gunship, Krait MkII, Python, and Fer-de-Lance.

The Alliance Challenger is most commonly available in Alliance systems. Despite its name and affiliation, it requires no rank or reputation with the Alliance to purchase.

The Anaconda is a ponderous yet highly versatile vessel that excels in multiple roles. At a cost of over 146 million Credits, it is the third most expensive ship available, behind only the Federal Corvette and the Imperial Cutter. While the Federal Corvette is specialized for combat, and the Imperial Cutter is a multipurpose ship with exceptional cargo capacity, the Anaconda can be competitively adapted for combat or trading as necessary. It also currently has the highest potential jump range of all ships after Engineering, making it a superb choice for long-distance journeys.

Overview
The Anaconda's bridge is located on the top of the ship roughly at its midpoint. The pilot's station is positioned at the center of the bridge, with 2 co-pilot seats on either side. The canopy offers a wide horizontal field of view (more than 180 degrees), however the canopy's widths are tapered off to either side, limiting vertical field of view. The ship's nose also obstructs view underneath the ship. In a combat scenario, 2 large hardpoints and 2 utility mounts are deployed directly in front of the bridge, which can obstruct the pilot's view when they fire.

Boasting an array of weapon hardpoints, the Anaconda is a formidable combat ship capable of holding its own against multiple opponents. It, the Fer-de-Lance, the Federal Corvette, and the Imperial Cutter are the only ships capable of equipping the powerful Class 4 weaponry. The weapon hardpoint locations are as follows: Two Class 3 Large hardpoints top mounted side-by-side to each other in front of the cockpit and about 1/3 the ship length back from the front tip with slightly blocked aft line of sight. One Class 2 Medium hardpoint side mounted on each side near the front tip of the ship (2x Class 2 medium hardpoints total) with decent lines of sight. One Class 3 Large hardpoint mounted on the underside of the ship, near the tip of the ship, with somewhat blocked aft line of sight. One Class 4 Huge hardpoint mounted on the underside of the ship at about 1/3 of the ship length back from the front tip, mounted slightly lower than the underside class 3 hardpoint, with nearly uninterrupted forward and below lines of sight and somewhat blocked aft lines of sight. Two Class 1 Small hardpoints mounted on the underside of the ship, side-by-side to each other, at the very back of the rectangular Cargo bay area, with nearly uninterrupted lines of sight in all underside directions but have limited firing arc convergence with the top mounted hardpoints, namely in front of the ship. As of the release of Horizons: Guardians it became one of the eight ships compatible with fighter hangar module for docking ship-launched fighters.

Defensively, the Anaconda is extremely sturdy when customized for survivability. It has 8 utility mounts, the highest amount of any ship in the game; and its potent Class 8 power plant allows a Shield Generator, a Shield Cell Bank and multiple Shield Boosters to be activated simultaneously and still have enough leftover to power the weapons and other systems. Even should the shield fail, the Anaconda has a base armor hitpoint of 945, the second highest of any ship in the game, after the Type-10 Defender, and the large number of optional internal compartments give plenty of room to install Hull Reinforcement Packages or Module Reinforcement Packages to stack even more protection. The max amount of hull armor highpoint is 6,137.5 without visiting an engineer. However, with engineering, the Anaconda can have an armor of 9,821.5, the most of any ship. Last but not least, should the need to retreat arise, the Anaconda has a mass lock factor of 23, meaning most ships would not be able to slow down its FSD charging process.

The Anaconda is also a popular choice for explorers, since its hull is relatively light considering its massive size, and it has a class 6 internal module slot for the Frame Shift Drive, allowing it to achieve moderate jump range. Its jump range is not as great as dedicated exploration vessels such as the Diamondback Explorer, but it can cover a much greater distance before needing to refuel, thus making it overall faster on long journeys. Explorers can also use the high number of optional internal compartments to accommodate the various modules needed for exploration such as scanners, fuel scoop and Auto Field-Maintenance Units.

Some wealthy traders also make use of the Anaconda due to its high jump range, enormous cargo capacity (up to 468T of cargo, a figure surpassed only by the Lakon Type-9 Heavy, the Federal Corvette, and the Imperial Cutter), and superb defensive capabilities.

Overall the Anaconda is ideal for veteran pilots of all trades who have a large sum of credits at their disposal but don't have high rankings with either of the superpowers. The only downsides of the ship are its sub par speed and maneuverability, as well as the cost to upgrade and maintain the ship: prices for less essential modules will easily exceed 1 million credits, whereas more important modules are priced in the tens or hundreds of millions of credits each. The repair fees for the Anaconda are also relatively high, since repair costs are calculated based on the purchase price of the ship and its modules. It is usually cheaper to repair an Anaconda's modules using an Auto Field-Maintenance Unit.

Due to the location of the Cargo Hatch on the Anaconda, deploying an SRV from Horizons will cause the SRV to fall the distance to the ground, or in the case of boarding it will cause the SRV to float upwards. Due to the Hatch location it can also be difficult to get the SRV in the correct position to board, transfer cargo, etc.

The Anaconda has an available 16 piece cosmetic Ship Kit that can be purchased from the Frontier store which allows you to "remodel your ship in your personal style". The ship kit does not affect gameplay.

The Engineers are known individuals that can modify your ship's weapons and modules. The Horizons expansion is required to access them as they reside in planetary bases. Engineers can only modify a specific set of weapons and modules depending upon their lore and preference. Some engineers are suited more for explorers whilst others for bounty hunters.

In total there are 20 engineers. Before you can get an invite to an Engineer's base you must learn about them first, either through common knowledge or from hearing about them through other Engineers.

To be able to get an invite to an Engineer's base, you first have to meet their invite requirements (listed as How to Get Invite in table below). These requirements vary and some engineers are easier to obtain an invite than others. Once invited and having traveled to their base, you can unlock their services by doing a task that they ask you to do, such as providing a commodity they require.

Engineer Ranks
Upon unlocking their services you are given a reputation rank to the engineer, going from 1 to 5, where 5 is the highest reputation achievable. These reputation ranks determine what level of modification you can do, with every modification crafted your progress to the next reputation level increases. As you increase your reputation with the Engineer you will be able to craft higher level modifications which provide increased effects.

While you can craft modifications in order to increase your reputation level, you can also increase the level by making a profit with the engineer. Depending on the Engineer, you might be able to sell commodities, exploration data or bounty vouchers:
Engineer Reputation Level
Required Profit
Grade 1
Unlocked as soon as Engineer task has been completed
Grade 2
Selling Exploration data/Commodities with a net profit of 500,000 Credits
Grade 3
Selling Exploration data/Commodities with a net profit of 2,000,000 Credits
Grade 4
Selling Exploration data/Commodities with a net profit of 8,000,000 Credits
Grade 5
Selling Exploration data/Commodities with a net profit of 16,000,000 Credits

It should be noted that Engineers may not be able to craft all 5 modification levels for a module type.

Crafting with an engineer
Materials are required by the engineers to upgrade modules on the player ship. Each blueprint specifies which materials are needed, and how to get them (either from destroying ships, completing missions, and visiting signal sources, or from a planetary surface ). Different engineers require different materials, meaning not all materials gathered can be used by the same engineer.

Before you upgrade a module, you will see an information screen that lists the materials needed for the modification, the possible range for applied effects (with each effect having a minimum and maximum change value), and the percentage chance to receive a special effect (which only applies to weapons). You will only see the exact outcome of the upgrade after you have committed to spending the materials. It is also possible to choose to decrease the level progressing with an engineer for a guaranteed special effect on the module after reaching at least reputation level 2. After spending the resources to craft the upgrade, you may either choose to accept the changes, discard them or retry the modification. If you choose to discard the changes, any previous engineer upgrade on that module will remain and the materials used in the making are used up. With either choice your engineer level will increase.

Please note that you can only have one upgrade modification installed per module. Installing a new modification will remove the old modification permanently. Thus it is not possible to have a module with multiple modifications. This limitation should not be confused with the number of stat changes and effects a modification has, as these are determined by the particular modification and can be numerous.

The Taipan is a Ship-Launched Fighter manufactured by Faulcon DeLacy and included in the Elite Dangerous: Horizons 2.2 update. It can only be deployed from a Fighter Hangar equipped on a larger ship.

Overview
Of the three fighters, the Taipan is not as fast as the F63 Condor nor as maneuverable as the Imperial Fighter, but it does have the most armour and shields.

The Taipan Fighter can be purchased in Alliance and Independent systems only, but can be restocked in any system.

The rear wings of the Taipan have their in-flight position (the non-docking configuration) animated based on the heat level of the fighter. As the ship's heat level increases, the rear wings will decrease the amount they are swept back in a V shape and will become closer to a straight wing shape.

Variants
The Taipan is available in 6 variants, which differ only in weapons and utility modules, and slightly in the top and boost speed. F-variants have fixed weapons and G-variants have gimballed weapons.
*Concept art of the Taipan referred to it as the "Independent Fighter".
*The Taipan's design similarities to Lakon Spaceways ships caused many players to assume that it was a Lakon product, but descriptions in the game and on cosmetic items in the Frontier Store for the fighter confirm that it is from Faulcon DeLacy.

An Alien Structure (colloquially referred to as a "Barnacle") consists of an organic growth with a central, ribbed peak surrounded by Organic Structures. They are related in some capacity to Thargoids.

Appearance
At first sight the central column looks very much like a regular, sea-based barnacle sitting on the ground. However, closer up, it appears to consist of a number of individual obelisks making up the structure. At ground level the obelisks do not quite meet, leaving gaps through which a more organic looking material can be seen which radiates a blue-green light. It is approximately twice the height of a Scarab SRV.

The peaks of each obelisk is coloured a creamy white, with a strange symbol visible on the side. This is currently the cause of much speculation amongst commanders with many believing it to be a reference to Barnard's Loop, an emission nebula in the Orion constellation.

Large Clusters
After September 26, 3303, CMDRs began discovering much larger clusters of Alien Structures. These clusters had grown into a roughly octagonal shape, with crystal-like formations erupting from the ground and linking them together. It is possible that these large clusters are the precursors of future Thargoid Surface Sites. It's also called a Barnacle Forest due to the large scale.

Interaction
The barnacle appears to be fairly benign, and has so far been unresponsive to interaction. The central column seems to be impervious to damage, with commanders having tried firing on it with a wide range of weapon types.Cite It also cannot be targeted by ship or SRV systems, and doesn't show up on scanners.

There have been reported anomalies near these objects,Cite with ship scanner glitches being fairly common. When nearby, a strange sound can be heard coming from it, which sounds similar to an Unknown Artefacts, but rather sounds more like an animal noise.

Unknown Artefacts (UA) interact with the barnacle via a sort of tractor beam. The barnacle gives off visual and sound effects as any nearby debris slowly rises within the beam towards the UA, only to be dropped back onto the barnacle, having no obvious effect on anything in the end.

Connection to Thargoids
On June 2, 3303, CMDR Mobiusetti documented the first known interaction between a Thargoid Interceptor and Alien Structures on Pleiades Sector OI-T C3-7 A 6 at coordinates -42.77, -21.70, confirming the two are related. The Unknown Ship approached one Alien Structure, incapacitating any nearby ships and SRVs. The craft then rotated until its propulsion array faced and was aligned with the Alien Structure, before drawing a pulsing beam of light or energy from it for a brief period. The Unknown Ship then departed as rapidly as it arrived. It is possible that Alien Structures serve as refueling stations of some kind for Unknown Ships, and the Meta-Alloys they produce are fuel or repair materials for them, but this is currently only conjecture.

It's been observed when a Thargoid Interceptor visits a Barnacle site it releases a cloud of green "particles" This could be a shield that they enable or disable. Or maybe a chemical compound to trigger something such as growth in the Barnacles.

The Interceptor has a similar shield in combat when it takes too much damage. That usually happens when one of its petals (hearts) gets destroyed. The Thargoid ship may need to disable its shields before it can refuel/fire the green beam at the barnacles.

The Fer-de-Lance (commonly abbreviated as FDL) is a heavy combat ship, featuring a hull that is a bit more resistant to smaller weapons than other ships of its class, making it well suited in the role of bounty hunting. It is the only medium ship capable of mounting class 4 weaponry.

Although fast, manoeuvrable and well armed, the Fer-De-Lance suffers from a few major drawbacks, which include a poor FSD jump range, tiny fuel tank and a limited number of internal compartments for its size.

Utilizing the class 6 powerplant Fer-De-Lance has a relatively low heat signature, and is well-suited for both shielded (using a shield cell does not result in a major overheating, and the strong base shielding can be improved further with shield boosters) and shieldless builds (small heat output, durable hull and the ability to mount several heat sinks without sacrificing other utility modules allowing for prolonged silent running).

The weapon hardpoints are located as follows: two top mounted class 2 hardpoints on the nose about a quarter of the way back from the tip, two side mounted class 2 hardpoints at about the ship's midpoint, and a single bottom mounted class 4 (huge) hardpoint in the centre of the ship's frame. Four out of six utility mounts are located around the huge hardpoint on the bottom, with the other two being behind the cockpit, next to the fins on top of the vessel.

The Fer-De-Lance has different heat radiator animations for general heat dissipation and Frame-Shift Drive charge up for hyperspace. While both feature the animation of the same yellow/orange lighted radiators, the Frame-Shift Drive charging animation also features blue lighted radiators and two blue beams. The blue beams are projected from slightly behind the cockpit and are visible from the cockpit from the side windows on both sides.

The pilot's station is offset right from the centerline. The Auxiliary station is offset left from the centerline and although it is side by side with the pilot's station, is slightly farther back from the front canopy.

The Majestic Class Interdictor is a capital-type ship for the Empire. It has an array of weaponry including Modular Interceptor Guns and Railguns.

Design
The official The Art of Elite Dangerous art book describes the Interdictor:

"The Empire has always gone for opulence, style and quality with no expense spared."

"Their capital ships are not just warships, but also serve as roving embassies or giant yachts for their wealthy and powerful owners. Internally they are luxurious, at least in those parts used for entertaining, with the internal rotating ring providing comfortable artificial gravity for ambassadorial dinner parties. Guests would have little indication they were in space, let alone aboard a powerful warship."

David Braben explained "Where luxury comes is where you actually got gravity. That's why this thing is spinning using the centripetal force to actually give you the sensation of gravity as you move around. This ship is huge and that round section is also huge. The point is even a low level of gravity is very comfortable, you know water settles. The contrast with the Empire is for the senior people at least on this ship they get gravity for their sleeping quarters, for where they eat and all that sort of thing."
Notes
* Random appearances in High Intensity Combat Zones and Capital Ship zones starting in Gamma update.
* After destroying all of its Heat Relays it will be forced to retreat and FSD from the battlefield.
* One can be found stationed in Synteini, It appears to be a permanent post.
* Two are docked for repairs outside Jefferies Port in the Ugrivirii system.
* Capital Ships have an exclusion zone. Flying too close to a Capital Ship is considered a threat and will make you a target, even if you are friendly. The Capital Ship will often inform you when you are getting close, telling you to back off.
* They can also be found at Capital Ship Docks
* A large collection of debris can be found at the capital ship point of interest within the Facece system. Another Majestic will soon jump in once the player has established an instance. Many Commanders think that the debris was once a Majestic. It is still unconfirmed what destroyed it, were this the case.
