There are three main categories of planets: Terrestrial planets, Water Worlds. and Gas Giants.

The term planet refers to celestial bodies orbiting a star with a gravity in a specific range. The gravity of a planet has to be strong enough to hold fluids in a stable state (hydrostatic equilibrium) which prevents them from escaping the planet, and low enough to prevent nuclear processes to start as in stars.

Some astronomical objects that meet the official criteria for planet status yet also happen to orbit a planet are instead classified as natural satellites or moons. When a moon's orbit expands to the point that the barycentre of the planet-moon system falls outside the center of the planet, then both bodies would be considered planets and part of a double-planet system.
|Rocky Ice World
|White - Grey - Light blue - Light brown
|Uncommon
|Rocky ice world. Typically formed in the cooler regions of star system these worlds have a small metal core and thick rocky mantle with a crust of very deep ice. Geological activity is common in these worlds because of the large quantities of volatiles in the crust, often creating a thin, sometimes seasonal atmosphere.
|Common (Rare if orbiting M, L, T, S class stars)
|High metal content world with a metallic core. Worlds like this can have metallic ores near the surface in places, especially around areas of past volcanism.
|
|-
|Metal-Rich Body
|Atmospheric: Black, brown, visible lava.

Airless:

Typically deep red/orange due to proximity to star.
|Rare, can be found in close orbit around G, F and A class stars.
|Metal-rich worlds like this have a large metallic core, with plentiful metallic ores even at the surface. In places, especially around areas of past or current volcanism or liquid erosion, some higher metals can be found in their elemental form too. Mining is therefore very efficient, so these worlds are highly valued.

This type of planetoid is always within close proximity of a star, often taking the form of a lava-covered planet or a potato planet.
Grey.
|Rare (Commonly found orbiting M Class stars)
|These are planets or moons with a nonspherical shape, with a radius of less than 1 000 KM. It's elongated and can resemble a potato. Typically do not retain any atmosphere.

Take caution when travelling near nonspherical bodies, as their small size can cause one to believe they are travelling further from the body's orbital cruise zone than they actually are and subsequently colliding at a significant velocity with the celestial body's glide engagement zone, triggering an emergency drop from supercruise and causing starship damage.
</gallery>
|I
|Uncommon
|Class I or Jovian gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres. Colouration comes from clouds in the upper atmosphere of ammonia, water vapour, hydrogen sulphide, phosphine and sulphur. The temperature at the top of their upper cloud layers is typically less than 150 K.
|
|-
|II
|Rare
|Class II gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres. Water vapour in the upper cloud layers gives them a much higher albedo. Their surface temperature is typically up to or around 250 K.
|
|-
</gallery>
|III
|Uncommon
|Class III gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres without distinctive cloud layers. Their surface temperature typically ranges between 350 K and 800 K. They are primarily blue in colour because of optical scattering in the atmosphere - with the chance of wispy cloud layers from sulphides and chlorides.
|
|-
</gallery>
|IV
|Very Uncommon
|Class IV gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres with carbon monoxide and upper clouds of alkali metals above lower cloud layers of silicates and iron compounds, hence he brighter colours. The temperature of their upper cloud layers is typically above 900 K.
|
|-
</gallery>
|V
|Very Rare
|Class V gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres, with thick clouds of silicates and iron compounds, even metallic iron.They are the hottest type of gas giants with temperatures at their upper cloud decks above 1400 K, and much hotter in the lower layers, often emitting a dull glow from the internal heat within.
|
</gallery>
|Helium-rich
|Very Rare
|Helium-rich gas giants have a greatly inflated percentage of helium compared to the hydrogen in their atmosphere. Much of their hydrogen has been lost over time because they have insufficient mass to hold on to it. It may also be because temperatures in their past were much higher, driving off the hydrogen at a greater rate.
|Very Rare
|Gas giant with ammonia-based life. This is primarily a hydrogen and helium-based atmospheric gas giant, but a little below the surface cloud layers,life exists based in the ammonia-cloud layer. The chemistry of this gaseous region is far from equilibrium, with a surprising excess of oxygen and many carbon-based compounds giving it some vivid colours. As with many such gaseous living systems, it is underpinned by vast quantities of free-floating radioplankton - tiny carbon-based algae, each retaining small quantity of liquid ammonia, extracting their energy from the intense radiation flux.

There are a list below of nouns, verbs, etcetera, that are replaced every now and then by viral words origination from players in Elite: Dangerous. The list also consists of irregular words said by NPC's/AI's in the top-left communications panel in the ship's canopy. The list below is categorized in alphabetical form from letter A to Z.

* AFMU: Auto Field-Maintenance Unit.
* AspX: Abbreviation of the Asp Explorer.
* ASPX: Another, incorrect abbreviation of Asp Explorer. Used by players under the misconception that the word "Asp" is an acronym ("ASP Explorer"); an "asp" is another word for a "viper", following the Elite series' trend of naming some ship models after snake species.
* AX: Anti-Xeno. Used to refer to any activities or ship builds relating to combat with Thargoids.
* Allie: An NPC or player aligned with the Alliance. Pronounced as "all-ee" than "ally".
* Boiling: Silent Running near a star or a station orbiting close to a star.
* Big Blue Beluga: A term used when one comes across an invincible, Elite NPC flying a Beluga Liner with a vibrant blue paint job with unlimited health will interdict and destroy an unsuspecting player for an unknown reason. Only a small amount of encounters have been reported and the so-called "Big Blue Beluga" phenomenon is very likely to be a bug in the game.
* Board Flipping: The bygone practice of switching between Open/Private Group/Solo modes to force mission boards to refresh and present new missions, usually done to stack multiple missions of the same type to maximize convenience and profitability. While viewed with distaste by a segment of the community, Frontier Developments have confirmed that Board Flipping is not an exploit or violation of the game's Terms of Service. Board flipping is no longer possible since patch 3.3, as the missions change now every 15 minutes, not after relogging.
* Brick: Nickname for the Type-6 Transporter, due to its brick-like appearance.
* Buggy: Surface Recon Vehicle.
* Carebear: A player who plays in Open, but believes that other players have no right to interfere with them regardless of the circumstances. Carebears complain at length whenever their ship is destroyed by another player despite Open's primary purpose being to facilitate PvP activity, and ship destruction at the hands of another player being a well-recognized risk of playing in Open. They also often demand that Frontier Developments either reimburse them the rebuy fee or fully restore their ship and any cargo in the event they could not afford the rebuy, as well as punish the attacker. Due to this behavior, Carebears are considered an entitled and toxic element of the community. Carebears are not to be confused with victims of Ganking or Griefing, which involves the deliberate and repeated destruction of a player's ship with the intent of provoking an emotional reaction from the victim for the attacker's personal amusement.
* CG: Community Goal. Commanders can sign up for missions and community rewards at stations that are hosting a community goal.
* CMDR: Abbreviation of Commander.
* Combat Logging: See Combat Logging. The act of shutting off the game during combat or when being interdicted. Unlike typical "rage-quitting", the goal is generally to avoid a potential loss of one's ship (and any commodities their ship may be carrying) and paying for the rebuy. The practice is viewed with distaste by much of the community and considered an exploit by Frontier Developments.
* Conda: Short term for an Anaconda. Not to be confused with the F63 Condor, a ship at the other end of the size spectrum. Build is often tagged on: shieldconda, plasmaconda, cannoconda, etcetera.
* CQC: Close Quarters Combat. A combat game mode inside the Elite: Dangerous universe where human combatants fight each other.
* CZ: Conflict Zone. A region of space currently in a state of conflict between two local factions.
* DBS: Short term for the Diamondback Scout.
* DBX: Short term for the Diamondback Explorer.
* Death Flower: Slang for a Thargoid Interceptor.
* DSS: Detailed Surface Scanner.
* FD: First Discovered. Signifies the player who first discovered a particular astronomical object.
* FDev: Frontier Developments, the developers of Elite: Dangerous.
* FDL: Short term for the Fer-de-Lance. Could also be used to refer to Faulcon DeLacy, but isn't typically used to do so.
* Fed: NPC or player aligned or allied with the Federation/the Federation itself.
* Freagle: The free Eagle MkII given to players who pre-ordered Elite Dangerous.
* Freebooter: A term originally said by authority vessels against a pilot caught doing an illegal action. An illegal plunderer, pillager, or invader.
* Friendship Drive: Affectionate term for the Frame Shift Drive based on the pronunciation of the Verity COVAS.
* FSS: Full Spectrum System Scanner. Most players refrain from using three S's in the abbreviation.
* Ganking: Attacking other players when the odds are greatly against the victim, i.e. they have a much less powerful ship, are new to the game, or are greatly outnumbered. If unjustified by any game mechanic such as Powerplay or piracy, it may be considered abusive.
* Gold Rush: When a large number of players flock to an area to take advantage of missions that are extremely profitable and also low-risk, fast to complete, or very simple. Gold Rushes are generally not considered exploits, but are often caused by bugs or oversights, and Frontier Developments is quick to take action to end them once they are widely known. See here for a list of previous Gold Rushes.
* Griefer: A player who deliberately irritates and harasses other players. See Griefers for more information.
* Grinding: Completing repetitive tasks many times over in order to get game rewards. Grinding is generally not considered enjoyable, and can be a criticism of game mechanics. Also can be the hallmark of a particularly determined player, however.
* HazRES: A Hazardous Resource Extraction Site. These sites don't enjoy the authority protection that other resource sites do.
* HGE: High Grade Emissions
* HiRES or HighRES: A high intensity Resource Extraction Site, one where pirate or hostile activity is high.
* High Wake: An inter-system jump, or hyperspace; the wake left behind by a ship entering hyperspace.
* Hot Soup: Fuel scooped from a star.
* II: Interstellar Initiative.
* Imp: An NPC or player allied with the Empire and flying an Imperial vessel.
* KGBFOAM: An easy-to-remember acronym for the star types that can be scooped for fuel. The galaxy map allows route filters to be applied relating to — amongst other criteria — star type.
* Lithobraking: A humorous term for bringing a ship to a complete stop by colliding with a landable planet's surface, resulting in the loss of the ship. A common and unintentional occurrence on high-gravity worlds.
* Loop of Shame: term for missing (station etc.) in supercruise, and needing to loop around to jump out.
* Mass Jump: When a large group of ships in the same instance jumps to hyperspace at the same time. Most commonly done during player expeditions. See Mass Jump.
* Meta: The metagame, the "game within a game". Originally a term from chess, it refers to advanced players making study of game mechanics to gain further advantage. See Engineers.
* Noob Hammers: Refers to the long "arms" that can be present on the exterior of certain Coriolis stations. Since docking with such stations can require piloting around the rotating arms to reach the Access Corridor, inexperienced pilots have been known to collide with them.
* NPC: Non-player character. This is a broader term, coined in the early days of multiplayer games, used to describe characters that are not players, but are under computer control.
* NSP: Notable Stellar Phenomena. A Point of Interest found in space with scannable anomalies.
This is usually done by players well outside the bubble who want to quickly return there for whatever reason.
The Type-6 Transporter is a ship manufactured by Lakon Spaceways. One of five dedicated freighters in the Lakon family, the Type-6 is considered an entry-level vessel for traders and is mainly used for hauling commodities throughout the galaxy. This ship has a medium Landing Pad size and unlike the larger Type-7 Transporter, Type-9 Heavy, and Type-10 Defender, it can dock at an Outpost. Due to its' poor armour and manoeuvrability, it is not suited for combat and it is advised that traders avoid combat situations entirely unless they have either an escort or shield and hull upgrades. The Type-6 is also the cheapest medium-sized ship available on the market. Lakon also offers a combat-oriented variant of the Type-6 called the Keelback.

Overview
The Type-6 Transporter is an amazing trader and is considered the next step up in terms of cargo capacity from the multipurpose Cobra MkIII. When fitted for maximum cargo capacity, which can reach 114 tonnes, many traders find that the Type-6 becomes quite suited for trading standard commodities in bulk rather than hauling rare commodities in long jump distances. After upgrading the Frame Shift Drive to increase its' jump range, the Type-6 Transporter is better at hauling commodities in long jump distances.

The Type-6 Transporter has also found a niche as an exploration vessel; when stripped of all unnecessary weight and stocked with an upgraded frame shift drive, the Type-6 Transporter can reach jump ranges just short of the Asp Explorer at a much lower cost, though it is significantly less capable of defending itself than an Asp Explorer should it encounter a hostile vessel. It is still almost three times more expensive than the Cobra MKIII, which can also be used for exploration. Because of its high Compartment count, it is capable of holding more fuel and a bigger fuel scoop and is better at Passenger missions.

In combat, the Type-6 is second only to the Hauler as the worst ship in the role. It has the same hardpoints as the Sidewinder but has much lower mobility and thus cannot evade fire or keep its fixed hardpoints on a target nearly as well and also attracts much more dangerous vessels than the Sidewinder would. Its low maneuverability also makes it more vulnerable to being Interdicted. Its advantage is it can be quite hardy, its shields and armour are rather good for its price so it can often take hits, though this requires lowering the cargo capacity. The Type-6 has a deceptively low Mass Lock factor of 8, meaning most ships can mass lock it. Jumping to another system to flee combat is advised due to this, as mass-locking will not occur. If one wishes to take down oncoming enemy pirates while still making some profit from trade the Keelback is a much better option.

The weapon hardpoints are located as follows: Two bottom mounted Class 1 small hardpoints mounted one on each side of the ship, separated by a central ridge.

The Type-6 has an available 12 piece cosmetic ship kit that can be purchased from the Frontier store, allowing you to "remodel your ship in your personal style". The ship kit is purely cosmetic and does not affect gameplay in any way.
Notes
* Prior to v1.2, the Type-6 had a tendency to overheat, to 100% or greater, making fuel scooping and consecutive hyperspace jumps more risky unless an A-rated power plant was also used (reducing the average maximum heat to 95%). This was especially dangerous because the cargo hatch module tends to take a lot of heat damage which can lead to a malfunction causing cargo to jettison. As of v1.2, this tendency has been corrected and the ship now runs much cooler, making it less likely to suffer heat damage.

Combat Logging is the act of logging off or exiting a session of Elite Dangerous during ship-to-ship combat, either PvE or PvP, in an illegitimate way in order to prevent an undesirable update to player save data. Combat logging is most often done to avoid death during combat due to insurance costs, but it is also used to avoid incurring fines and bounties during activities such as smuggling. Some players may also combat log before imminent ship destruction to avoid losing cargo considered valuable that cannot be re-bought, such as rare commodities that can only be discovered and not purchased. This exploit works because the game only saves player data when certain events occur, not continuously, and the player can interrupt the game before it saves by terminating the application or network connection. Players who witness or suspect combat logging can report the individual to Frontier Developments for review.

Definition
Frontier Developments' official stance on combat logging by terminating the game application or the network connection is that it is an "undesirable exploit" that is "not part of the game", and therefore an offense that may be punished with a ban.

Exiting the game via the menu and waiting for the 15-second cooldown to elapse is always legitimate, and will not incur any penalty.
While viewed with distaste by a segment of the community, Frontier Developments have confirmed that Board Flipping is not an exploit or violation of the game's Terms of Service. Board flipping is no longer possible since patch 3.3, as the missions change now every 15 minutes, not after relogging.

* AFMU: Auto Field-Maintenance Unit.
* Boiling: Silent Running near a star or a station orbiting close to a star.
* Buggy: Surface Recon Vehicle.
* CMDR: Abbreviation of Commander.
* DSS: Detailed Surface Scanner.
* Freebooter: A term originally said by authority vessels against a pilot caught doing an illegal action. An illegal plunderer, pillager, or invader.
This is usually done by players well outside the bubble who want to quickly return there for whatever reason. Once in the bubble, players will then switch to another ship or have their original ship transferred to them.
}}The Farragut Battle Cruiser is the mainstay Capital Ship of the Federation. Heavily armed with classified and top-secret weaponry, the Farragut stretches over two kilometers long. The backbone of the Federal Navy, it also forms the central core of Federal Navy Fleets. The Farragut Battle Cruiser, abbreviated as the "FBC" is a battlecruiser-classed Capital Ship. Similar to a Fleet Carrier-classed Capital Ship, the Farragut Battle Cruiser is equipped with hangars capable of transporting entire groups of Federal Corvettes, alongside housing multiple F63 Condor squadrons. Unlike the Empire's multi-role Majestic Class Interdictor that sacrifices firepower in exchange for being effective in different roles than battle, the Farragut Battle Cruiser was designed primarily only for battle, giving it a greater chance to win during a battle between a Farragut Battle Cruiser and a Majestic Class Interdictor. It currently cannot be piloted by players.

Design
The official The Art of Elite Dangerous art book describes the Farragut:

"In contrast to the opulence of the Empire’s Majestic Class Interdictor, the Federation’s capital ships are brutal, practical war machines inside and out."

"Airtight doors split the interior into many separate compartments. Grab-handles abound, as do access panels and all the paraphernalia of a military vessel. There would be no mistaking a Federal ship’s interior with an Imperial one."

According to David Braben "There will be no gravity, you'll just float around. Things like magnetic boots will make getting around very easy. These would look like normal shoes with fancy technology that make them stick to the surface." "The Federal ship is a lot more Spartan, a lot more just practical warship essentially." "The Federal ship's central section, with design, one of the design briefs we've had is try to design ships with functions in mind. In the Federal ship it's utility that's important. The reason its got this central corridors is this is where ships come out of their hangars. It's to try and protect the hangars from outside. So the reason they face inward and the ships fly out you know they're already up to speed. That would be very heavily protected potentially with shields around it."

Specifications
Core Dynamics Farragut-Class Battlecruisers represent the cutting edge in military technology. A single FBC can carry several squadrons of Federal Fighters and multiple Federal Corvettes across hundreds of light years without any difficulty. These deep deployment capabilities, coupled with extraordinarily heavy firepower, practically guarantee that a single FBC will completely overpower all but the most well-equipped opponents.
Notes
* All Farragut Battle Cruisers appear to share the registration tag of FDN-RD5.
* The Farragut Battle Cruiser cannot be destroyed by reducing its hull to 0%.
* After destroying all of the Faragut's Heat Relays the ship will escape from battle by activating its Frame Shift Drive.
* Routing the Farragut awards the player 500,000 CR.
* Capital Ships have an exclusion zone. Flying too close to a Capital Ship is considered a threat and will make you a target, even if you are friendly. The Capital Ship will often inform you when you are getting close, telling you to back off.
* A Farragut is stationed above Earth in the Sol system, perhaps as a permanent post. It does not maintain an exclusion zone for friendlies.
* They can also be found at Capital Ship Docks.

Trivia
* The Farragut Battle Cruiser length (2040m) is similar to 6 Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers (337 m).
* The names "Agamemnon" and "Ajax" are also names of Astute-Class submarines being built for the Royal Navy.
* The Farragut class most likely gets its name from David G. Farragut, the first American Admiral.
The Majestic Class Interdictor is a battlecruiser-classed Capital Ship built for the Empire. Abbreviated as the "MCI", the Majestic Class Interdictor was designed mainly as a support carrier than a battleship, though it can still effectively partake in the role of a battleship. Similar to a Fleet Carrier-classed Capital Ship, the Majestic Class Interdictor is equipped with hangars capable of transporting several Imperial Cutters, alongside housing multiple Gu-97 squadrons. It has an array of weaponry including Modular Interceptor Guns and heavily-specialized Railguns. The rear portion of the battlecruiser has a visible, rotating artificial gravity centrifuge, used as barracks for Imperial Navy personnel onboard the Majestic Class Interdictor. It currently cannot be piloted by players.

Design
The official The Art of Elite Dangerous art book describes the Interdictor:

"The Empire has always gone for opulence, style and quality with no expense spared."

"Their capital ships are not just warships, but also serve as roving embassies or giant yachts for their wealthy and powerful owners. Internally they are luxurious, at least in those parts used for entertaining, with the internal rotating ring providing comfortable artificial gravity for ambassadorial dinner parties. Guests would have little indication they were in space, let alone aboard a powerful warship."

David Braben explained "Where luxury comes is where you actually got gravity. That's why this thing is spinning using the centripetal force to actually give you the sensation of gravity as you move around. This ship is huge and that round section is also huge. The point is even a low level of gravity is very comfortable, you know water settles. The contrast with the Empire is for the senior people at least on this ship they get gravity for their sleeping quarters, for where they eat and all that sort of thing."
* Capital Ships have an exclusion zone. Flying too close to a Capital Ship is considered a threat and will make you a target, even if you are friendly. The Capital Ship will often inform you when you are getting close, telling you to back off.
* They can also be found at Capital Ship Docks
* A large collection of debris can be found at the capital ship point of interest within the Facece system. Another Majestic will soon jump in once the player has established an instance. Many Commanders think that the debris was once a Majestic. Upon close inspection, the wreckage closely resembles that of an Imperial Clipper. It is still unconfirmed what destroyed it, were this the case.

The Asp Explorer is a ship manufactured by Lakon Spaceways. Agile, well-armed for its size, and capable of achieving high jump ranges, the Asp Explorer is a popular and affordable multipurpose vessel seen in ports across the galaxy, and that has earned a solid reputation for long-range missions and those requiring some discretion. It is a civilian version of the military-spec Asp MkII, which first saw service in 2878. After obtaining the model's manufacturing license, Lakon Spaceways marketed them heavily at customers looking for their first multi-crewed ships. The vessel has become a mainstay among explorers due to its versatility in outfitting and an open, unobstructed cockpit canopy that allows for some dramatic views. Though the ship's name is accompanied by the word "Explorer", it was still manufactured by Lakon Spaceways as a multipurpose vessel and even with its emphasis on exploration, the Asp Explorer can also serve as an effective freighter or bounty hunting ship.

Overview
The Asp Explorer's six weapon hardpoints are located as follows: on each side of the cockpit, 1 medium hardpoint above the waterline and 1 small hardpoint below the waterline (total 2 medium, 2 small), and 2 small hardpoints located directly beneath the cockpit. Due to the shape of the ship and the hardpoint locations, the medium hardpoints and small hardpoints share a small field of fire (i.e mostly directly ahead). Pilots should be aware that Turrets in both Medium Hardpoints will have firing arcs above the cockpit where the pilot can generally see the target that the turrets are shooting at. However, turrets in all four Small Hardpoints will have firing arcs below the cockpit, where the target will tend to be obscured from the pilot's vision by the flight console and the floor.

The pilot's station is located along the centerline of the ship on the bridge. A secondary, Multicrew-compatible station is located along the centerline of the ship below the bridge which is directly underneath the pilot's station.

While the Asp Explorer packs a decent amount of firepower, it lacks optimal heat dissipation, noticeably suffering in combat situations when equipped with thermal weaponry. This also can present difficulties during fuel scooping, especially when using a small Fuel Scoop. Speaking of heat, you can visually see the Asp Explorer open a sealant on the top of the vessel to dissipate heat into space when the ship's temperature is high.

The Imperial Eagle is an Imperial variant of the Eagle MkII that has been produced by Gutamaya since 3199. While the Imperial Eagle can easily exceed the speed of an Eagle MkII, this enhancement comes at the cost of manoeuvrability. The Imperial Eagle has seen service in the Imperial Navy and allied fleets for many years. The original Eagle model is a multi-role fighter where the Imperial version is geared more towards the interceptor role. It carries more powerful weaponry and is capable of a much higher top speed than the original, although this comes at the expense of some of the original ship's famed manoeuvrability. Unlike other Imperial ships, the Imperial Eagle does not require any rank in the Imperial Navy to purchase.

Overview
The Imperial Eagle boasts superior armour and shield strength in addition to one medium Hardpoint replacing one of the three small hardpoints on the regular Eagle MkII, however it is not as maneuverable as the original Eagle MkII. It is one of the fastest ships in the game; in fact, with EP thrusters and Engineer upgrades, it may have the highest potential normal-space speed of any playable ship.

The weapon hardpoints are located as follows: a single medium hardpoint on the top of the ship behind the cockpit and two small hardpoints mounted side-by-side on the underside of the main fuselage in front of the bump that contains the cargo scoop.
