The Vulture is a heavy space-superiority fighter manufactured by Core Dynamics. Featuring two large hardpoints, the Vulture packs serious firepower into a relatively small frame and excels at combat, but has difficulty adapting to other roles. Although its top speed is mediocre compared to other fighters, its one of the most maneuverable ships on the market thanks to its powerful lateral thrusters relative to the ship's mass, only being out-turned by smaller, less well-armed ships.

Overview
In combat, the Vulture is one of the most powerful small-sized ships. It is capable of easily staying out of the firing range of tougher ships like Anacondas or Pythons and its two large hardpoints are capable of dishing out heavy damage. However, the small number of hardpoints means weapons such as Missiles, Mines, Torpedoes or Railguns are not viable as they have limited ammo capacities and are not available in Class 3. As for weapon mount types, both fixed and gimballed mounts are viable due to the Vulture's nimble nature, but turreted mounts are inadvisable due to their higher power consumption, lower damage and that they don't take advantage of the Vulture's manoeuvrability.

Defensively, the Vulture has impressive statistics on paper. It possesses the highest base shield and armor hitpoints out of all small sized ships; it has very good internal compartments (even better than the much more expensive Fer-de-Lance); and its number of utility mounts is 4, the same as larger ships such as Python and Federal Gunship. However, there is a catch, as the Vulture is held back by its limited power capacity. This greatly limits viable loadout choices and encourages smart module priority control.

The Vulture suffers from overspecialization and is very poor in any job besides bounty hunting and assassination. It has terrible cargo capacity, even for its size so it will do very poorly in any form of trading or mining but most importantly it functions very poorly as a pirate as it has very low space for plundered loot, especially when a Hatch Breaker Limpet Controller is installed, however, its small size makes collecting cargo easier, meaning collector limpets are not needed. It has awful jump range at a woeful maximum of 22.36 ly without engineering, the second lowest of any small sized ship making it not only useless as an explorer, it can't easily get to Interstellar Factors to clear any bounties. Unlike the Fer-de-Lance it does very poorly as an anti-Thargoid ship, as its low number of hardpoints limits its use of Ax weaponry, leaving it without many options to deal with Interceptors. Against Scouts it also suffers as it will struggle to keep a sightline on the quick moving ships; since it cannot make much use of turreted mounts and they will quickly tear the ship to pieces.

Overall the Vulture functions as a small Fer-de-Lance; unbeaten in sheer power for its size but is one of the worst ships in any other role. Because it is so limited to Bounty Hunting it has very few options and makes a poor single vessel for a commander to fly and the Asp Explorer or Keelback may be more appealing due to their multi-purpose ability.

The Vulture's two large hardpoints are located above and behind the cockpit, about halfway down the hull of the ship. Due to the spacing between the hardpoints, a loadout of two fixed weapons may have slight issues with converging on smaller targets.

The Vulture has two manned stations. The pilot's station is on the centerline of the ship. The auxiliary station is offset to the port side above and behind the pilot's station. Because turreted mounts are a very bad idea on a Vulture and it has no fighter bay it is one of the least useful ships for Multicrew.

The Vulture has an available 16 piece cosmetic ship kit that can be purchased from the Frontier store which allows you to "remodel your ship in your personal style". The ship kit does not affect gameplay.
Trivia
*The Vulture was originally priced at 21,925,615 CR. After an outcry from the community that it was overpriced, Frontier lowered the cost of the Vulture to 4,925,615 CR.
*The Vulture is produced by Core Dynamics and sold to all three of the Major Factions.
*One of the Ship Kit pieces will obscure the pilot's view slightly, making it the only ship kit to somewhat affect gameplay.

The Engineers are known individuals that can modify your ship's weapons and modules. The Horizons expansion is required to access them as they reside in planetary bases. Engineers can only modify a specific set of weapons and modules depending upon their lore and preference. Some engineers are suited more for explorers whilst others for bounty hunters.

In total there are 24 engineers. Before you can get an invite to an Engineer's base you must learn about them first, either through common knowledge or from hearing about them through other Engineers.

Engineer Bases
To be able to get an invite to an Engineer's base, you first have to meet their invite requirements (listed as How to Get Invite in table below). These requirements vary and some engineers are easier to obtain an invite than others. Once invited and having traveled to their base, you can unlock their services by doing a task that they ask you to do, such as providing a commodity they require.

These are the bases of all known engineers.
Engineer Ranks
Upon unlocking their services you are given a reputation rank to the engineer, going from 1 to 5, where 5 is the highest reputation achievable. These reputation ranks determine what level of modification you can do, with every modification crafted your progress to the next reputation level increases. As you increase your reputation with the Engineer you will be able to craft higher level modifications which provide increased effects.

While you can craft modifications in order to increase your reputation level, you can also increase the level by making a profit with the engineer. Depending on the Engineer, you might be able to sell commodities, exploration data or bounty vouchers:
Engineer Reputation Level
Required Profit
Grade 1
Unlocked as soon as Engineer task has been completed
Grade 2
Selling Exploration data/Commodities with a net profit of 500,000 Credits
Grade 3
Selling Exploration data/Commodities with a net profit of 2,000,000 Credits
Grade 4
Selling Exploration data/Commodities with a net profit of 8,000,000 Credits
Grade 5
Selling Exploration data/Commodities with a net profit of 16,000,000 Credits

It should be noted that Engineers may not be able to craft all 5 modification levels for a module type.

Crafting
Materials are required by the Engineers to upgrade modules on the player ship. Each blueprint specifies which materials are needed, and how to get them; material sources include (but are not limited to) destroyed ships, mission rewards, ship/wake scans, signal sources, mining, planetary surface resources, and more. Different Engineers require different materials, meaning not all materials gathered can be used by the same Engineer. Up to one blueprint can be pinned per Engineer; pinned modifications can be crafted at any station equipped with a Remote Workshop, but a modification crafted remotely will not contribute to reputation with its Engineer.

Before upgrading a module, an information screen lists the materials needed for the modification, and the range for applied effects. Negative effects are static for a given grade and will only increase with higher grades, while positive effects increase per grade as more materials are spent on them. Eventually, a grade will be increased to a maximum value, at which point the only way to upgrade that modification further is to advance to the next grade. As modifications are purchased, reputation with the Engineer increases, unlocking access higher grades of modifications.

Grades must be progressed through consecutively from 1 to 5; it is not possible to immediately apply a Grade 5 modification to a module unless the module already has a Grade 5 legacy modification from before 3.0. Legacy modifications can converted into 3.0 modifications, but will be reduced in quality by one grade in the process.

While a modification is applied to a module, an additional quantity of materials can be spent to apply a single Experimental Effect to further enhance the module. Experimental Effects are only available at Engineer Workshops, and cannot be applied remotely.

Please note that you can only have one upgrade modification installed per module. Installing a new modification will remove the old modification and the currently applied experimental effect permanently. Thus it is not possible to have a module with multiple modifications. This limitation should not be confused with the number of stat changes and effects a modification has, as these are determined by the particular modification and can be numerous.

The Type-10 Defender is a Lakon Spaceways ship that represents a comprehensive revision of the Type-9 Heavy. The Alliance commissioned Lakon to build the Type-10 to combat the escalating Thargoid threat following a series of attacks against Stations in the Pleiades Nebula. Announced on December 17, 3303, Lakon committed to an aggressive production schedule that delivered the Type-10 in volume to retailers the following week. Lakon intended the Type-10 to be "particularly effective in combat situations".

Overview
Like the Type-9 Heavy it was based on, the Type-10 Defender is a slow, bulky ship, but substantial modifications to the design give it more versatility. The Type-10 is not only somewhat faster than the Type-9, but has stronger armour, better heat management, double the utility slots, four added large weapon hardpoints, and two Military Compartments, making it a viable warship. The Type-10 retains the Type-9's compatibility with Multicrew and ability to mount a Fighter Hangar.

Notably, despite the Type-10's focus on combat-readiness, it also retains the same overall cargo capacity as the Type-9, allowing it to be configured into a well-protected heavy trader. However, due to the wide spacing of the weapon slots, gimballed or turreted weapons are recommended. Another limitation to keep in mind is the Type-10's Class 6 Power Distributor, which is inadequate when considering the amount of hardpoints the ship has. This causes the Type-10 to struggle with weapons that have high Distributor Draw, such as lasers and railguns. The Type-10's Power Distributor will be upgraded to Class 7 in the 3.0 update.

The Type-10 also features mobile structural elements, like the Diamondback Explorer. The ship's small wings are extended during flight, but will fold up when landing gear is deployed.
