The Sidewinder MkI is a ship manufactured by Faulcon DeLacy that utilizes the Spin Ionic MV. A small, inexpensive ship designed to tackle a variety of roles, such as light transport and combat, the Sidewinder is often the first ship that a newly-registered Pilots Federation pilot will fly and own. Its dependability, manoeuvrability, and versatility combine to make it an excellent choice for both green and experienced pilots alike.

Overview
The Sidewinder MkI is a low-cost starter craft given to newly-licensed pilots. At any time that a pilot loses their current ship, they can elect to accept a Sidewinder on loan from the Pilots Federation if they are unable to afford a replacement for the destroyed ship or do not want a replacement.

Although the Sidewinder is cheap, it is not harmless; it is among the top when it comes to manoeuvrability compared to other ships. In particular, it can out-turn most other ships, being topped in that category only by the Eagle MkII, Vulture, and Imperial Courier, and has solid lateral thrust. It is, however, one of the slowest-moving and weakest-hulled ships available. Only the Anaconda and certain dedicated trading ships have slower maximum speeds, and only the Eagle MkII has a weaker hull.

The Sidewinder is therefore an acceptable ship in combat, but lacks firepower. When flying one, using its excellent turning to lock opponents into circling matches, and burning away opposite of the enemy to escape are advised tactics. When fighting a Sidewinder, keep it at range and lay down heavy fire if the current ship can't outmanoeuvre it, and it should be destroyed quickly; with a ship that can keep up with its turning, close in and blast away, making sure to stay away from its front. While it has terrible damage output, it still beats out Hauler for damage and is better than Type-6 Transporter and Dolphin in combat, due to superior mobility and cheaper price.

As a Trader the Sidewinder is the least useful ship in the role. With a cargo capacity of only 12T its rare to find missions that even allow such small cargo transfer. Therefore it is advisable to make profit with data delivery missions instead until either Hauler or Adder become options. The same applies to its role as a miner.

With 24.5Ly of potential jump range without engineering the Sidewinder is not a terrible option for exploration and can be a good introduction to the role before Hauler becomes an option. It surprisingly beats out several high tier ships like Fer-de-Lance and Type-9 because of this.

Overall the Sidewinder is the very first ship pilots fly and it fits that role perfectly; it is functional in most roles but is one of the worst ships usable in each individual role. The Sidewinder lets pilots come to grips with what exactly they want to do to earn credits, then whether to buy an Eagle or a Hauler (or whether to skip the Hauler and go straight to the Adder) being the first decision most pilots make. In late game the Sidewinder really only has one practical application as a kamikaze ship where you aren't expecting or wanting to escape something alive due to its very cheap rebuy, and was commonly used to clear bounties prior to changes in Beyond Chapter 1. It is also commonly used for griefing purposes near starports.

The weapon hardpoints are located as follows: 2 small hardpoints in front of cockpit on upper surface of ship.

The Sidewinder MkI has an available 16 piece cosmetic ship kit that can be purchased from the Frontier store which allows you to "remodel your ship in your personal style". The ship kit does not affect gameplay.

Lore
The official Elite Dangerous Player's Guide explains the lore behind why players start with a loaned Sidewinder:

Every player starts as a new member of the Pilots Federation. After being notified of your successful membership a secret benefactor has a transmission delivered to you with a secure code. It gives you access to a starship account that's preconfigured with your credentials. This is how you gain an indefinitely loaned and insured Sidewinder.

Behind this windfall is a secret organisation which seeks those with the potential to become real movers and shakers who can mould and shape the galaxy. This gift is a test so they can see whether you have those qualities.

Purchase Locations
The Sidewinder can be purchased at nearly any shipyard.

The Beluga Liner is a passenger ship manufactured by Saud Kruger. Comparable to an Imperial Cutter in mass and even bulkier in volume, the Beluga is designed to carry passengers to their destination in comfort. Only the Beluga and its smaller cousins the Orca and the Dolphin can be equipped with Luxury Passenger Cabin modules, allowing it to transport VIPs.

Overview
The third in the Saud Kruger line after the Dolphin and Orca, the Beluga Liner is the Passenger equivalent of the Type-9; sacrificing the huge cargo hold to carry luxury VIPs.

The Beluga Liner is designed to accommodate even more passengers in luxury and comfort than an Orca, but this specialization comes at the cost of speed and maneuverability. The result is a slow, cumbersome ship that is difficult to fit through a station's Access Corridor, deploying the landing gear folds the ship's bulky rear fins down, making it easier to traverse. To compensate, the Beluga features a Class 7 Frame Shift Drive and a 128-tonne Fuel Tank that gives it an impressive travel range for long-distance cruises. The Beluga can also fit a Fighter Hangar to bolster its modest offensive capability, though it is in no way optimized or recommended for extensive combat.

In Combat the Beluga is not very good. While the ship does boast better hardpoints and maneuverability than the Type-9, the hardpoints are positioned in a way that does not allow them good coverage areas or firing arcs, making it difficult to keep even turreted mounts on targets. The biggest downside is the shield generator and hull mass; which make the Beluga very easy to take down with even moderate fire. Combined with its colossal size making it a ridiculously large target the Beluga is often easy pickings for many ships and even a Fighter Hanger only helps so much; especially as the Beluga only has 2 compartments above size 5 that aren't reserved.

As a cargo ship, the Beluga has 368t of potential space. This is fairly poor for a large ship, only beating the Type-7 by 60 tonnes. The Beluga is capable of doing cargo runs but the price puts it in range of the Type-9; which completely overshadows it all together.

As a dedicated, high-capacity passenger liner or simple Explorer, the Beluga suffers from a number of shortcomings that restrict its ability to adequately serve other roles. The number of Reserved Compartments reduce the available outfitting space for optional modules. Furthermore, due to its already high hull mass and lack of Class 7 or above unreserved Internal Compartments, the Beluga cannot hold a Shield Generator larger than Class 6, making it the only ship unable to fit a shield generator that is optimized for its mass. The Beluga also has issues with heat management, which can exceed safe levels during and immediately after a Hyperspace jump due the heat build-up from the charging FSD; this can be partially mitigated by installing a higher-rated Power Plant, but the added mass will hinder the ship's jump range.

The Beluga is debatably worse than the Orca predecessor. It has a worse jump range, only marginally better combat potential and a frustratingly large size making docking difficult. The Beluga is able to carry a large amount of passengers however, it is unbeaten in the profit one can make for bulk VIP passenger missions. However for long range missions, the Dolphin is a better option and for bulk lower class, the Type-9 can carry more. This makes the Beluga a very specialised ship that excels in bulk VIP passenger delivery, but little else.

The Beluga Liner is available only to the owners of Elite Dangerous: Horizons.

Exploration vessel
The Beluga Liner is a large class VIP passenger vessel. The Beluga will be the most "sci-fi, star trek" ship available, that makes it great at being an explorer.

In Beyond Chapter Four, the optional compartments free up. This means there are 4 size 6 slots, a couple of 5s and some 3s. Pair that with integrating the Discovery scanner you can be an explorer with a large ship and extended range.
Here is the Beta Coriolis rough build.
* 1 size 6 fighter bay: 2 different craft To check out all the new planetary goodies.
* 1 size 4 SRV: 2 SRVs in case 1 goes down
* a couple AFMS: for repairing, and another in case the first goes kaput.
* 1 size 3d repair limpet controller
* a size 32 cargo, but filled with 6 limpets
* a size 5 shield (smallest I could go)
* Surface scanner
* Guardian booster (if you have it)
* A fuel tank: To go further into the unknown areas without scoopable stars
* A very rough engineering job got the above build to ~40Ly jump range to ~50 with the guardian tech
Many explorers don't need a Fighter Bay, but once an explorer gets enough rank and money, they would go back out to the black with a big ship capable of doing many lengthy trips to unscoopable star systems. It has a great view too.

The Diamondback Scout is a long range combat and reconnaissance ship which was released in the Powerplay update.

Overview
The Diamondback scout is a cheap low level exploration vessel available quite early on. Its main purpose is to allow commanders to get into exploration at a tiny price.

As an Explorer the Scout is very effective. At 30lYs without engineering the scout has a high range for its price tag. The downside is the the Hauler and Adder can both outdo it in this aspect. Another downside is the tiny amount of compartment space and small fuel tank which can cause various issues. Overall the Scout is a very good ship to get into exploration with.

In Combat the scout is adequate. It has very good mobility and a small body letting it dodge with ease. Good heat signature and a lot of utility mounts make it capable of running stealth builds and is very effective in the role. It has good damage with 2 Medium and 2 Small hardpoints which is one of the best for its price tier letting it become a reasonably effective fighter. As a stealth build or high range fighter the Scout is perfect and makes a good bounty hunter; but its terrible compartment and cargo space make it a rather terrible Pirate.

Its uses in trading, mining and Passenger are somewhat poor. With 28t max size it does have higher capacity than the Adder, but It doesn't compare the the Cobra MkIII.

Overall the Diamondback Scout really is a good low tier exploration vessel and is equally good as a nimble fighter.

The weapon hardpoints are located as follows: 1 small hardpoint on each side of the cockpit, and 1 medium hardpoint on each side of the cockpit for a total of 2 medium and 2 small. These hardpoints have their aim points arranged in a straight horizontal line with little space between reticule dots making them very usable with fixed mounts. However their side mounting and close spacing also make good mounts for gimbaled and turreted weapons.

Lakon would later release the Diamondback Explorer, which dramatically increases the jump range and combat ability at a higher cost. Alongside it was the Asp Scout, which was intended to be a competitor to the Diamondback ships, but failed due to its price and mediocre stats.

History
* The Diamondback Scout length (39m) is similar to the Space Shuttle orbiter (37m) that was operated by NASA.
* Excluding the Cobra MkIV, the Diamondback Scout is tied with the Type-7 Transporter for lowest amount of Livery options. This is particularly odd as the Diamondback Explorer has a far great amount despite being released much later.

The Sidewinder MkI, built by Faulcon DeLacy, is a superb multipurpose ship suitable for any role. It is inexpensive and can be used for light transport and combat duties. Most pilots begin their career in a Sidewinder.

Its manoeuvrability makes it an excellent choice for both green and experienced pilots. The Sidewinder is a dependable vessel that will get you where you need to go, safe and sound.

Uses the Spin Ionic MV.

Overview
The Sidewinder is the default craft offered throughout the game. The player starts in one, and if at any time their ship is destroyed they can get a free Sidewinder (lent by Pilots Federation) if they can't or don't want to replace their previous ship. New players who still struggle with learning the game, may find themselves flying in a Sidewinder for a longer time or going back to it often.

Although the Sidewinder is cheap, it is not harmless; it is among the top when it comes to manoeuvrability compared to other ships. In particular, it can out-turn most other ships, being topped in that category only by the Eagle, Vulture, and Imperial Courier, and has solid lateral thrust.

It is, however, one of the slowest-moving and weakest-hulled ships in the game; only the Anaconda and certain pure trade ships have slower maximum speeds, and only the Eagle has a weaker hull (but makes up for it with stronger shields.)

The Sidewinder is therefore an acceptable ship in a (figurative) knife-fight, but lacks firepower. While it has terrible damage output, it still beats out Hauler for damage and is better than Type-6 and Dolphin in combat, due to superior mobility and cheaper price.

The Sidewinder lets pilots come to grips with what exactly they want to do to earn credits, then whether to buy Eagle or Hauler (or whether to skip the Hauler and go straight to the Adder) being the first decision most pilots take.

Trivia
* The Sidewinder MkI length (14.9 m) is similar to a General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon (15.06 m).
