The chess analogy is actually quite good.

Imagine two chess players. One is a professional, who's played chess for some 10 years, played in a few tournaments, and has an ELO rating of maybe 1000-1200 or so.

The other is a rookie, who enjoys playing chess during his free time and on the weekend. But of course he's not as good.

When the rookie is matched against the pro, it's no wonder he loses. He probably gets checkmate'd within the first few minutes. But it's okay, because he might have learned a thing or two. And he thinks "okay, that was tough luck today. But let's see what tomorrow brings..."

Now comes the interesting part: Imagine the pro player (and maybe some other pro players as well) forcing themselves upon him, making him play match after match against them, while he just wants to play some casual chess. Of course he loses each and every single time. They probably even laugh at him for being so stupid to play against them. If he then decides to quit mid-game, they go "oh, come on, are you such a poor sport that you have to run away when it goes badly for you? why do you play chess if you don't want to lose? Go play chess on your smartphone or something..."

...you see the analogy?

The problem is that E:D mixes game modes in a way that should be separate. The solo mode is not really a single-player game (you still need to be online, but cannot in any way interact with other people who are online or playing in solo), while the open play mode does not distinguish between PvE-style gameplay and PvP-style gameplay. And then there's the PvP arena mode which is exclusively PvP. So why is there no pure PvE mode?

It would be easy to implement, just have a flag that the player can set (with reasonable timeouts/delays) on wether he wants to engage in PvP or not, and have some zones/systems/areas that are declared as PvP with some warning like "if you enter this system you will be flagged for PvP". Problem solved for everyone. And this was suggested to Frontier from almost day 1, they thought there would not be enough interest. Combat Logging is the only way to protest that and show them that there is indeed interest :)

I can accept getting killed, that's not the problem. I have been killed enough times that it doesn't make me bat an eye anymore.

The problem is that the whole online environment is not roleplay friendly. Just an example: Do you really think that authorities would turn a blind eye while transports carrying hundreds of refugees from a burning starport get shot down one by one? You can argue about "powerplay" and "faction allegiance" all you want but this is nonsense. That's what I mean by repercussions. People killing hundreds of people and getting what, a few thousand credits bounty on their head? yeah...

I regularly do combat logging when flying in a T9.

Why I don't play solo then? Because I actually like the role playing aspect of E:D, talking to other CMDRs, meta-playing in FTC situations, etc... But until Frontier implements some sort of "PvP flag" like other MMOs or at least some repercussions for people randomly attacking innocent transporters I will continue to combat-log the heck out of this game. I'm playing E:D and not EVE for a reason.

And the fact that they don't implement measures against it makes it seem like they somehow accept people doing it... (yeah yeah, E:D doesn't have central servers etc. etc. but it would still be possible to detect regular combat-logging even within a P2P-style online game)
