Ah well. No matter how you look at it, they were the good guys. Doing what had to be done to stop alien invasion. "Canon" Jameson being idealistic fool was a loose end that had to be removed - can't have a heroic figure telling things to public when it was not cunclusive what the outcome of mycoid attack would be. It would put a lot of people working for INARA and organization itself at risk.

Sure, there was a lot of human deaths at their hands. Loose ends, experiments, etc. But that's just how it works in real world as opposed to fairy tales. Facing alien race that is openly hostile and superior to you, there's no telling how far the conflict may escalate and how fast things can go south for your species as a whole. So measures had to be taken, and taken they were. They sure as hell saved a lot more lives than they sacrificed by making thargoids retreat. Prolonged conflict would see untold amount of victims, both military and civilian.

It is easy for public to judge INRA's actions after all these years, but organization did exactly what it was meant to do, and results were better than anyone could have expected.

"Realistic scenario". In which no magical shield that somehow protects pilot from being sucked into space or being shot at directly but can't keep air in exist. Or does exist, but for obvious reasons can't protect the pilot from more shots towards broken canopy making a space kebab outta him.

Way fights go in the world of Elite, without the game mechanics simplifying things, it would also mean you have a glaring weakness that no amount of armor tank would be able to cover. I mean, these engine pods can't be all that armored, and they are easily accessible for enemy fire from any angle.

But I guess point is kind of moot, since in any realistic scenario within an Elite-like world first and last thing to go after shields go down would be canopy, taking down the pilot as well.
