Conflict Zones are temporary warzones that occur wherever factions are waging war or civil war against each other. Conflict zones come in three types — low intensity, medium intensity and high intensity — depending on the size of the ship spawn.

Upon entering conflict zones are randomly populated with NPC fighter ships of the warring factions and players can choose to fight for a side via a interface that will appear in the message pane of the comms panel. Once on a side they will continue to communicate about the status of the battle: each enemy destroyed, allies destroyed and when close to victory or defeat.

Apart from normal bounty vouchers for wanted ships, players have the unique opportunity to collect combat bond vouchers in conflict zones if they choose to side with a faction and battle the opposition. These combat bond vouchers can be redeemed at any local station in the system.

Conflict Zones can be won or lost. Winning a conflict zone will increase your reputation with the allied group, but harm it with the hostile group. The status of the conflict is displayed by bars in the upper right had display, along with the status of any extra objectives. Upon all players departing the zone the conflict zone resets.

Special objectives appear in the Conflict Zones. These include Captains, usually in large engineered ships, Spec Ops usually in medium engineered ships, War Correspondents in ships you have to protect, and Propagandist you have to destroy. The higher the intensity, the more frequently these will spawn. In high intensity only, there is a chance for a capital class ship to appear, which will become an objective. Completing objectives nets progress towards a victory in the conflict zone.

Ships
Which ships spawn will depend on the allegiance of that faction. For example, a Federation allied faction will be flying Federal ships. All faction can pilot non-faction combat ships of any kind, from Eagle up to Anacondas. Some ships will be engineered, regardless of intensity.

Missions
During times of civil war some factions may also hand out special combat bond missions through the Mission Board which call for the destruction of opposing targets in conflict zones (referred to in combat missions as warzones). Keep in mind, ships spawned through the special objectives such as Spec Ops wings do not count towards these missions.

Location
Conflict zones are rarer and more difficult to locate than resource extraction sites since they only appear in systems where a conflict between factions occurs. Star systems with a large population are more likely to become the center of conflict.

Any station which has its State marked on the system map as War or Civil War is guaranteed to have conflict zones. This also goes for a star system which has one of its local factions marked that way in system map view.

The GalNet news feed, accessible when docked at stations, usually has reports on which star system is currently the center of major conflict in the galaxy.

Notes
* During supercruise conflict zones show up automatically as locations in the Navigation panel if they are within 1000Ls of the player. But they do not show up when a player is within a station.
* Strangely, Type-9's can appear on rare occasions as a fighter for either side. Being a bulky trade vessel, its usually a free target.
* Conflict zones are referred to as Warzones in the in-game descriptions of combat missions.
* All NPCs spawning in conflict zones are fighters aligned with either of the warring factions. The only exception is any NPCs chasing a player, such as pirates or assassins.
* When approaching an area with the war or civil war status, it is not uncommon for multiple conflict zones to appear. When more than one of this type of zone appears, it is likely that a major fleet battle is taking place. the victor of the battle is the one who controls the station near, or on the planet.
* On some occasions, no ships will spawn when a player enters a combat zone. Special objectives can still occur however, including the appearance of capital class ships, which can make it very easy to destroy them.
* Normally, the player has a target limit; only a certain amount of foes will target them at once, usually this is 2 but will occasionally reach three. In some instances, all enemies in range will instantly change their target to the player often leading to the player being attacked by upwards of 6 enemies at once even if several allies are still nearby. Its not know what causes this to occur and is assumed to be a bug with AI targeting priority. in most instances enemies will return to fighting different targets after a sort time, likely due to the player not normally being targeted by more than 3 enemies at once.

The Keelback is a freighter ship with enhanced combat capabilities based on a Type-6 Transporter chassis. It debuted in the 1.5 "Ships" update on December 2015. It was first mentioned in a list from the Answers from the Devs where it said it is an upcoming ship.

As this had never been heard of, people speculated that it was an alternative name to the Panther Clipper. However, on a stream David Braben revealed that it is a ship similar to the Lakon Type-6 Transporter, but with better weapon hardpoints. It also has a better power plant at the cost of fewer internal compartments.
Overview
The Keelback is advertised as a well-armed trader; being able to haul large cargos without the need of an escort, similar to the Type-9, and particularly similar to the Type-10.

Like the Type-10 the Keelback sacrifices cargo space to improve combat effectiveness; though not nearly to the same degree. In comparison to the Type-6, the Keelback has 16T less potential cargo space, a rather large amount in the early game. Combined with its higher cost, lower jump range, higher rebuy and generating tougher NPC pirates, the Keelback is not as good of a trader as the cheaper Type-6, but it is more than capable and is still the second best ship at the role in the price range and much cheaper than the Federal Dropship or Python as an armed medium trader.

In combat, the Keelback retains the 2 small hardpoints of its Type-6 base model and now has two additional medium hardpoints as well. While this is a large improvement; the type-6 has the same damage output as a Sidewinder, so the comparison is rather irrelevant. Compared to ships of its price range, such as Vipers, Asp Scouts, and Diamondbacks, the Keelback has the lowest damage output of the range. It can easily be out-damaged by most ships in its price tier and only has marginally better shielding and armour. However, the Keelback makes up for this with its ability to mount a Fighter Hangar. With combined firepower of itself and its fighter the Keelback can easily out-damage all ships in its price range, however, this does mean losing a huge amount of cargo space for both Hangar and Shield Generator. The rather poor maneuverability and speeds make the Keelback ineffective at Supercruise interdicting. All in all the Keelback can make for a good Pirate or Bounty Hunter for a commander looking to utilise fighters and has good cargo space for plundered loot.

As an explorer, the Keelback has less range than the Type-6, due to its higher weight. Combined with worse compartment space, the Keelback is a slightly worse ship in the role than the Type-6.

The Keelback has one role it shines in; as a Miner. With its two medium hardpoints, large cargo space, fighter bay for protection and smaller size the Keelback is one of the best ships available for the job and is by far the cheapest ship that is extremely effective in the role. Due to its small size, many rich pilots can still make good use of the ship for its impressive mining potential. Because fighter hangars make for great protection for a miner, it may even be more appealing than ships such as the Asp Explorer or Federal Dropship.

Overall the Keelback is a multi-purpose ship, capable of exploration, combat and trading while excelling at mining. Compared to similar ships such as the Asp Scout the ship generally does a much better job but has a much lower jump range. The Keelback is a good option for its price range for a multi-purpose ship.

Two medium hardpoints are located on top of the ship, very close to the cockpit, and two small hardpoints are located on the bottom of the ship a bit further back than the medium hardpoints. One of three utility mounts is located on the nose of the ship directly above the frontal landing gear piece, and two more on top and at the back. The interior is identical to that of the Type-6, however, it has a second seat situated behind the pilot and is capable of Multicrew. The ship also has unique rotating engine pods on each side that fill in the black gaps that were present on the T6. These are purely cosmetic, however.

The Keelback has an available 12 piece cosmetic ship kit that can be purchased from the Frontier store, allowing you to "remodel your ship in your personal style". The ship kit is purely cosmetic and does not affect gameplay in any way.

Because fighter hangers make for great protection for a miner, it may even be more appealing than ships such as the Asp Explorer or Federal Dropship.
