|Uncommon
|Rocky ice world. Typically formed in the cooler regions of star system these worlds have a small metal core and thick rocky mantle with a crust of very deep ice. Geological activity is common in these worlds because of the large quantities of volatiles in the crust, often creating a thin, sometimes seasonal atmosphere.
|High metal content world with a metallic core. Worlds like this can have metallic ores near the surface in places, especially around areas of past volcanism.
|-
|Lava Planet, Metal-Rich Planet
|Atmospheric: Black, brown, visible lava.

Airless:

Typically deep red/orange due to proximity to star.
|Rare, can be found in close orbit around G, F and A class stars.
|Metal-rich worlds like this have a large metallic core, with plentiful metallic ores even at the surface. In places, especially around areas of past or current volcanism or liquid erosion, some higher metals can be found in their elemental form too. Mining is therefore very efficient, so these worlds are highly valued.

This type of planetoid is always within close proximity of a star, often taking the form of a lava-covered planet or a potato planet.
|These are planets or moons with a nonspherical shape, with a radius of less than 1 000 KM. It's elongated and can resemble a potato. Typically do not retain any atmosphere.

Take caution when travelling near nonspherical bodies, as their small size can cause one to believe they are travelling further from the body's orbital cruise zone than they actually are and subsequently colliding at a significant velocity with the celestial body's glide engagement zone, triggering an emergency drop from supercruise and causing starship damage.
Gas-Giant-Class-I.png
</gallery>
|I
|Uncommon
|Class I or Jovian gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres. Colouration comes from clouds in the upper atmosphere of ammonia, water vapour, hydrogen sulphide, phosphine and sulphur. The temperature at the top of their upper cloud layers is typically less than 150 K.
|-
|<gallery type="slideshow" position="center" widths="250">
</gallery>
|II
|Rare
|Class II gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres. Water vapour in the upper cloud layers gives them a much higher albedo. Their surface temperature is typically up to or around 250 K.
|-
</gallery>
|III
|Uncommon
|Class III gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres without distinctive cloud layers. Their surface temperature typically ranges between 350 K and 800 K. They are primarily blue in colour because of optical scattering in the atmosphere - with the chance of wispy cloud layers from sulphides and chlorides.
|-
</gallery>
|IV
|Very Uncommon
|Class IV gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres with carbon monoxide and upper clouds of alkali metals above lower cloud layers of silicates and iron compounds, hence he brighter colours. The temperature of their upper cloud layers is typically above 900 K.
|-
</gallery>
|V
|Very Rare
|Class V gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres, with thick clouds of silicates and iron compounds, even metallic iron.They are the hottest type of gas giants with temperatures at their upper cloud decks above 1400 K, and much hotter in the lower layers, often emitting a dull glow from the internal heat within.
|-
Helium-rich_Gas_Giant.png
</gallery>
|Helium-rich
|Very Rare
|Helium-rich gas giants have a greatly inflated percentage of helium compared to the hydrogen in their atmosphere. Much of their hydrogen has been lost over time because they have insufficient mass to hold on to it. It may also be because temperatures in their past were much higher, driving off the hydrogen at a greater rate.
|-
|Gas Giant with ammonia-based life
|Very Rare
|Gas giant with ammonia-based life. This is primarily a hydrogen and helium-based atmospheric gas giant, but a little below the surface cloud layers,life exists based in the ammonia-cloud layer. The chemistry of this gaseous region is far from equilibrium, with a surprising excess of oxygen and many carbon-based compounds giving it some vivid colours. As with many such gaseous living systems, it is underpinned by vast quantities of free-floating radioplankton - tiny carbon-based algae, each retaining small quantity of liquid ammonia, extracting their energy from the intense radiation flux.

</gallery>
|I
|-
</gallery>
|II
|Rare
|Class II gas giants have primarily hydrogen and helium atmospheres. Water vapour in the upper cloud layers gives them a much higher albedo. Their surface temperature is typically up to or around 250 K.
|-
</gallery>
|III
|-
</gallery>
|-
|V
|-
</gallery>
|Helium-rich
|-
The chemistry of this gaseous region is far from equilibrium, with a surprising excess of oxygen and many carbon-based compounds giving it some vivid colours.

Planetary Landings is the act of landing on a planet with a ship. It was added with the Elite Dangerous: Horizons expansion on December 15, 2015.

Players are able to land on four types of airless planets - rocky, metal, ice and rocky/metal - which make up 61% of the planet types in Elite Dangerous' Milky Way. These planets vary in size and composition, therefore having different gravity forces affecting the flight and landing dynamics.

Some celestial body types, including water worlds and bodies with significant amount of lava covering their surface, cannot be landed on even when they have no atmosphere. The reason for this is likely due to there being no current game mechanic to deal with water, lava, and other large bodies of liquid substances. Earth's moon, Luna, cannot be landed on despite a lack of atmosphere; it is not know why. All yellow-coloured volcanic moons (similar to and including Jupiter's moon Io) will list 0.00 atmospheres, and cannot be landed on. The reason for this is unknown, though it could be due to the large amounts of volcanic activity on these moons, requiring implementation of their own game mechanics. Some bodies are permit locked for unknown reasons and therefore cannot be landed on. An example of this is Neptune's moon Triton, which could be landed on until it was unexpectedly permit locked.

The landings are graphically seamless with a small pause for instance loading, and the planets can be explored in low-level flight or by using a Surface Reconnaissance Vehicle. Once on the surface, players can discover constructed, as well as natural, points of interest, which can be military bases, research establishments, hideouts, starports, mining complexes, crashed ships and debris to investigate. <span style="color:#D3D3D3">The nature of the encounter varies depending on where the player is: the planet type and composition, and the local topography affected by geology.</span>

Landing on atmospheric planets with cities and lifeforms will be added with future updates. Check the Atmospheric Landings page for more information.

Landing
There aren't any transitions between supercruise and planetary orbit. When you go into orbit there's an altitude meter and G meter. When you drop out of supercruise over the surface of a planet, the game does peer-to-peer (P2P) matchmaking and instance creation. So dropping out of supercruise can cause a slowdown. The slowdown or load time was reduced after some updates.

It's possible to seamlessly travel from the surface of a planet into space and the rest of a solar system. However, this takes several hours without supercruise (Frameshift Drive).
Coming in the wake of the reveal of Elite Dangerous: Beyond at Frontier Expo 2017, it was determined that Distant Worlds II would launch in Q4 3304/Q1 3305, after the release of Beyond's exploration-focused Chapter 4 update.

The stated goals of the expedition are:
* We want to create an event that challenges its participants, like DWE 3302 did.
* We want to create interesting basecamp meetups and events, that include all what the first expedition had, and more - specifically utilising whatever new discovery mechanics the new content requires.
* We would like to reach the same scale as last time or beat it, and then take advantage of our large contingent in the hopes the expedition might discover some of the new and mysterious things FD have hinted at!
* We have plans to bring back the Distant Worlds weekly newsletter that proved so popular last time around, and eventually have it again bound into a book as a memento.
* Naturally DWE2 plan to work in conjunction with the Galactic Mapping Project to discover, catalogue, and name new POIs, spatial anomalies, and geological features.
* The expedition will encourage and facilitate all the emergent gameplay that explorers are renowned for into joining and helping organise and oversee certain aspects of this mammoth endeavour; Fuel Rats, Rock Rats, MediCorp, The Repair & Tour Group, The Galactic Travel Agency, Surveyors, Galactic Mappers, Scouts, and even squadrons that will hopefully be able to utilise the new fleet carriers.
* We will put together an experienced organisation team to help create a memorable event.

Expedition Proposal
On January 14, 3304, on the second anniversary of the launch of the Distant Worlds Expedition, the expedition outline was posted by Erimus. The proposal included a Community Goal idea that would be run in conjunction with the main expedition, which if implemented, would incorporate prospecting and mining into the expedition. Early plans also suggested Community Goals to construct a Starport in Sagittarius A* and a Surface Port in Beagle Point; while the former goal was mostly preserved for Waypoint 7 of the finalized proposal, the latter goal was cancelled.

Registration
Preliminary Route
The preliminary expedition route outlined on February 1, 3304 proposed that Distant Worlds II would travel through both Sagittarius A* and Beagle Point on the "Outbound" stage, while "The Voyage Home" stage would trace the journey of the USS Voyager. The journey would cover over 200,000 ly and was estimated to take 304 days to complete.
Finalized Expedition Plan
In early December 3304, Distant Worlds II organizers announced their finalized expedition plan. The expedition will depart from Waypoint 1 in the Core Systems on January 13, 3305 on the 18-week "Outbound" half of the journey to Beagle Point, which consists of four stages:

#Waypoints 1-5: Laying the foundations for Galactic Core scientific studies, revisiting mysteries of the past, and trailblazing the new age of discovery.
#Waypoints 6-9: Building the Galactic Core Starport and discovering secrets at the heart of the galaxy.
#Waypoints 10-12: Mapping the Aphelion.
#Waypoints 13-15: A journey across the Abyss... and beyond.

In addition to various community events and exploration opportunities along the full route, a Community Goal will take place at Waypoint 2, approximately 6,000 ly away from the Core Systems, and involve mining materials for the construction of a new Starport, which will be located in a system neighboring Sagittarius A*. At Waypoint 7, the Starport will be constructed and support a second Community Goal to upgrade its amenities for members of the expedition and future travelers. The expedition will remain in the galactic core region for two to three weeks before continuing onward to Waypoint 15 at Beagle Point.

The "Voyage Home" half of the expedition will begin sometime after the Distant Worlds II expedition reaches Beagle Point, and involve the return journey to the Core Systems via an indirect route. More details will be announced at a later date.

GalNet Report
GalNet featured a report on Distant Worlds II on January 4, 3305:

One hour before launch, participants were also encouraged to meet up at the original Distant Worlds launch site outside the settlement Brooks Point on Pallaeni A 1, and then move to the Distant Worlds Tourist Beacon 30 minutes before launch.

Within moments of the first launch event, the high number of players jumping from Pallaeni is believed to have caused a major server outage.
Expedition Waypoints
The expedition gathered at the Distant Worlds Tourist Beacon orbiting the main star of the Pallaeni system before departing for Waypoint 2. Instead of announcing all waypoint locations simultaneously prior to the start of the expedition, Distant Worlds II organizers will only reveal each waypoint one at a time to encourage expedition members to stay together, focus on the expedition's Community Goals and other events, and thoroughly explore the areas surrounding the waypoints for interesting discoveries.
