The '''Asp Explorer''' is a [[Ships|ship]] manufactured by [[Lakon Spaceways]]. Agile, well-armed for its size, and capable of achieving high jump ranges, the Asp Explorer is a popular and affordable multi-purpose vessel seen in ports across the galaxy. The ship has become a mainstay among [[explorer]]s due to its versatility in outfitting and an open, unobstructed cockpit canopy that allows for some dramatic views. Even with its emphasis on exploration, the Asp Explorer can also serve as an effective freighter or bounty hunting ship.

==Overview==
The Asp Explorer's six weapon [[hardpoint]]s are located as follows: on each side of the cockpit, 1 medium hardpoint above the waterline and 1 small hardpoint below the waterline (total 2 medium, 2 small), and 2 small hardpoints located directly beneath the cockpit. Due to the shape of the ship and the hardpoint locations, the medium hardpoints and small hardpoints share a small field of fire (i.e mostly directly ahead). Pilots should be aware that Turrets in both Medium Hardpoints will have firing arcs above the cockpit where the pilot can generally see the target that the turrets are shooting at. However, turrets in all four Small Hardpoints will have firing arcs below the cockpit, where the target will tend to be obscured from the pilot's vision by the flight console and the floor.

The pilot's station is located along the centerline of the ship on the bridge. A secondary, [[Multicrew]]-compatible station is located along the centerline of the ship below the bridge which is directly underneath the pilot's station.

While the Asp Explorer packs a decent amount of firepower, it lacks optimal heat dissipation, noticeably suffering in combat situations when equipped with thermal weaponry. This also can present difficulties during fuel scooping, especially when using a small [[Fuel Scoop]].

The '''Detailed Surface Scanner''' will give a pilot info on the composition of a moon, planet, star, or other stellar body and also data such as orbital distance and orbit time.

A [[Discovery Scanner]] is ''required'' for this module to be useful; both modules must be present on the ship for this one to provide information. Use of this module increases the amount of credits that can be earned in stellar cartography by about 30%,{{Cite}} and is considered essential for any pilot wanting to use exploration as their primary source of income.

In order to use this module a pilot must select the unexplored entity from their navigation panel then fly to within range (varies due to entity diameter) just as with scanning with the discovery scanner and as such does not need to be bound to a firing group.

The scan will take from 35 seconds down to 15 seconds depending upon the range at which the entity is scanned, 35 seconds for maximum range down to a minimum of 15 for close range. This difference in scan times may make it worthwhile to get closer to an entity being scanned to save a few seconds but risks the pilot being caught in the entity's gravity well.

Upon completion of the scan the pilot will receive a message confirming the detailed scan.
