The substance later named "mycoid" was created by a junior researcher at INRA's Hollis Gateway facility who specialized in agricultural science. He experimented on recovered Thargoid technology at a secret INRA base called Hollis Gateway in the Hermitage system, hoping to find an agricultural application for the tech, but accidentally discovered that a certain type of fungus could damage it.<ref>https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/75an5n/spoilers_havent_seen_this_here_yet_but_the_inara/</ref> This fungus became the basis for "Project Mycoid", the development and production of mycoid at other INRA facilities.

Rediscovered INRA bases feature large, corroded storage tanks marked "Warning: Mycohazard" that have leaked a reddish-brown organic substance, presumably the mycoid itself. The recently identified wreckage of a [[Thargoid Scout]] was found to have been contaminated by mycoid particles and also exhibits reddish-brown discoloration on its hull, strong evidence that the mycoid was successfully deployed against the Thargoids as intended.
