The design philosophy reflects Imperial sensibilities as it is faster and more elegant than the corvette, but doesn't quite match it in firepower. As with other Imperial warships the cutter is also used for projecting soft power, via diplomatic missions and support for friendly powers. It is possible, although rare, for a well connected client or patron to own one of these ships. Like the corvette it can deploy two small fighter class ships.|In-game description}}The Imperial Cutter is manufactured by Gutamaya, and is the Imperial Navy's counterpart to the Federal Corvette.

The Imperial Cutter is confirmed to debut in the 1.5 "Ships" update later in 2015.

The Cutter features 4 medium hardpoints: 2 on the nacelles and 2 on the belly; 2 large hardpoints on top of the ship and 1 huge hardpoint on the chin. Notably, the exterior lights on the ship change color from blue to red once hardpoints are deployed.

Frontier Developments also confirmed it will have bad manoeuvrability and a high top speed. It is the largest player piloted ship as of 1.5 Beta 3.

With its 792T cargo capacity it has the largest cargo bay a playable ship can have, topping the Type-9 with 260T more cargo space, over 48% more space, while having significantly better shields and speed than the Type-9. This will make it the most logical choice for traders.

Unlike the Type-9, it is extremely well-shielded, very fast (though not maneuverable) for its size, and reasonably well-armed, giving it far greater survivability and allowing some limited use of it as a combat ship, especially in the piracy role. In addition, with plenty of internals available to mount mining accessories while still leaving the largest open for cargo holds, excellent speed for moving from asteroid to asteroid, and a sufficiency of class 2 weapon mounts, the Cutter is unquestionably the best mining ship yet.
It epitomises elegance of form while packing a good punch. Officially the class is used to provide transport for officials that don't warrant the use of a Cutter or Interdictor. However its flexibility means that it fills many roles within the Imperial Navy and prominent citizens.|In-game description}}
The Imperial Courier is a fast multipurpose ship just barely larger than the Sidewinder. It is the third-lightest-hulled playable ship (after the Sidewinder and Hauler) thus far but its upgrades are heavier.

The Imperial Courier is armed and very well shielded for its small size, making it a great and evasive fighter in combat. In terms of agility it ranks somewhere close to the Viper, but its shields, when upgraded, are roughly in the range of the Vulture and some laser-heavy Fer-de-Lance loadouts thanks to a better power curve that allows easier use of shield boosters. It has better yaw, pitch and roll speeds than the Viper but slightly weaker lateral thrusters. Its top boost speed is roughly in the same range when fully equipped, but lightweight versions can easily exceed the Viper's speed cap. The Viper retains boost velocity longer, however, and can boost more frequently.

The weapon hardpoints are located in the following places: 1 medium hardpoint at the front of each engine nacelle, and 1 medium hardpoint underneath the nose.
It epitomises elegance of form while packing a good punch. Officially the class is used to provide transport for officials that don't warrant the use of a Cutter or Interdictor. However its flexibility means that it fills many roles within the Imperial Navy and prominent citizens.|In-game description}}

In terms of agility it ranks somewhere close to the Viper, but more than makes up for this by having twice the shields, and the power supply and utility points to mount shield boosters that take it well beyond that, up into the range of some Vulture or even Fer-de-Lance loadouts.

It epitomises elegance of form while packing a good punch. Officially the class is used to provide transport for officials that don't warrant the use of a Cutter or Interdictor. However its flexibility means that it fills many roles within the Imperial Navy and prominent citizens.|In-game description}}

In terms of agility it ranks somewhere close to the Viper. While it has a good pitch rotation speed, its slightly weaker vertical-lateral thrusters cause the Courier to drift more than the Viper. Even though the Courier has the same top boost speed as Viper, due to its low hull mass relative to modules, it is slightly slower and can't boost as often as the Viper, dropping down from the top speed faster.

The weapon hardpoints are located in the following places: 1 medium hardpoint at the front of each engine nacelle, and 1 medium hardpoint underneath the nose.
It epitomises elegance of form while packing a good punch. Officially the class is used to provide transport for officials that don't warrant the use of a Cutter or Interdictor. However its flexibility means that it fills many roles within the Imperial Navy and prominent citizens.|In-game description}}
The Imperial Courier is a fast multipurpose ship just barely larger than the Sidewinder. It is the third-lightest-hulled playable ship (after the Sidewinder and Hauler) thus far but its upgrades are heavier.

The Imperial Courier is armed, shielded and armoured well beyond what would be expected for its size, acting like a medium-heavy fighter in combat. In terms of agility it ranks somewhere between the much more powerful Fer-de-Lance and the longer-ranged Diamondback Explorer, falling well short of the Vulture or Eagle.

The weapon hardpoints are located in the following places: 1 medium hardpoint at the front of each engine pylon, and 1 medium hardpoint underneath the nose.

The PAGENAME, built by Faulcon DeLacy, is a superb multipurpose ship suitable for any role. It is inexpensive - free, in fact - and can be used for light transport and combat duties.

Its manoeuvrability makes it an excellent choice for both green and experienced pilots. The Sidewinder is a dependable vessel that will get you where you need to go, safe and sound.

Uses the Spin Ionic MV.

Overview
The Sidewinder is the default craft offered throughout the game. The player starts in one, and if at any time their ship is destroyed they can get a free Sidewinder if they can't or don't want to replace their previous ship. New players who still struggle with learning the game, may find themselves flying in a Sidewinder for a longer time or going back to it often.

Although the Sidewinder is cheap, it is not harmless; it is among the top when it comes to manoeuvrability compared to other ships. In particular, it can out-turn most other ships, being topped in that category only by the Eagle, Vulture, and Imperial Courier, and has solid lateral thrust.

It is, however, one of the slowest-moving and weakest-hulled ships in the game; only the Anaconda and certain pure trade ships have slower maximum speeds, and only the Eagle has a weaker hull (but makes up for it with stronger shields.)

The Sidewinder is therefore an acceptable ship in a knife-fight, but lacks firepower. When flying one, using its excellent turning to lock opponents into circling matches, and burning away opposite of the enemy to escape are advised tactics. When fighting a Sidewinder, keep it at range and lay down heavy fire if the current ship can't outmanoeuvre it, and it should be destroyed quickly; with a ship that can keep up with its turning, close in and blast away, making sure to stay away from its front.
It epitomises elegance of form while packing a good punch. Officially the class is used to provide transport for officials that don't warrant the use of a Cutter or Interdictor. The PAGENAME is a fast multipurpose ship confirmed for début in patch 1.3, the "Powerplay" update. Just barely larger than the Sidewinder, it is the second-lightest-hulled playable ship thus far (its upgrades are heavier, pushing its fully-loaded mass beyond that of the Eagle and close to the range of the Viper). The Courier is not as fast or long-ranged as its name might suggest, but is armed, shielded and armored well beyond what would be expected for its size in compensation, acting like a medium-heavy fighter in combat. In terms of agility it ranks somewhere between the much more powerful Fer-de-Lance and the longer-ranged Diamondback, falling well short of the Vulture, Sidewinder or Eagle. Priced between the Diamondback and the Vulture, this ship is an important step up to early pilots who prefer combat over other occupations.

The PAGENAME made its first appearance in the game in Standard Beta 1. It is a vessel used by Station security forces and law enforcement, and is currently one of the fastest ships available to purchase. It is primarily intended for combat; compared to the multi-role Cobra Mk. III, it has the same weapons capacity, slightly stronger shields per shield class, slightly weaker hull, marginally slower turn rate, much faster strafe speed, faster speed under normal thrust and slower speed under boost.

Its main drawbacks are that its heat dissipation, power generation and hyperspace capacity do not equal that of the Cobra, which limits the value of having the same hardpoint capacity; mounting the ship's full weapon weight makes it very short-ranged, and an energy-heavy armament causes it to either overheat or use all available power very quickly. Fuel is also an issue as the ship comes with a tank with a capacity of only 4 tons, and it can be extremely difficult to find a fuel efficient setup that does not compromise combat ability.

In addition to its official police/security role, the Viper's speed, range and combat capability make it ideal for bounty hunters, small-load couriers, mercenaries or smugglers, while its small cargo capacity makes it a very poor choice for traders, and a survivable but inadequately profitable platform for pirates.

The PAGENAME is the mainstay superiority fighter of the Federation Intervention fleet. Deployed locally by Federation capital vessels, the Condor is meant to fly in large numbers to make up for the lack of its defensive capabilities; it tends, as seen in Conflict Zones, to fly unshielded. Its weapons are light, and it can be destroyed by a single salvo from a pair of Class 3 burst lasers. Its only saving grace is that its extremely small size makes it hard to hit, and it can be assumed to be very cheap to mass produce. It can be seen in the Skirmish training scenario or Conflict Zones involving the Federal Navy. It has two weapon hardpoints.

The Condor is currently not flyable by players, but it is believed that it will become a flyable ship at some point in the game's future.

The Thargoids are an insectoid alien race who are said to originate outside of known space, perhaps existing in a parallel universe or spacial dimension. Thargoids are the one of two known sapient species in the galaxy (the other being human), although artifacts of other races have been found. Of course a lot of the galaxy remains unexplored so there may be races not yet discovered, but we should expect them to be quite rare.

They are very hostile and aggressive and have not been interested in diplomatic relations to date. It has been rumoured that Thargoids could be capable of building large artificial structures which could possibly be on a scale with planets, and certainly large enough to negate a ship's warp ability.

Certain events in Frontier: First Encounters have indicated that there may be another side to Thargoids; in prior conflicts, they have shown some anomalous behavior that does not entirely match with their popular image as relentless killing machines. At some point, a Commander Jameson may or may not have interacted with them, and may or may not have chosen to provide them with the vaccine to a genetically-engineered fungus ("hyper-mycoid") that attacked critical materials in their hyperdrives, preventing the construction of interstellar vehicles. If not, and if they appear in Dangerous regardless, then it can be assumed they developed a countermeasure on their own.

Frontier Development staff have previously commented that all Thargoids are female. David Braben hinted that should peace have ever been found with Thargoids, it would be a temporary measure.

It is not known what role they will take in Elite: Dangerous in their final incarnation, initially though they will be limited to encounters , but we can be sure they will be there.
Appearance
The common Thargoid warrior is a dark chitin-covered insect measuring just over 7 feet / 2 metres in height. They have six limbs, two of which are dedicated walking limbs (legs). The remaining four limbs have jointed hands each possessing three digits, one of which is an opposable thumb.

The head is a triangular ovoid in shape, with prominent faceted eyes mounted to the front. In general, the overall impression is similar to that of a praying mantis. There are two short antennae that protrude from the top of the head. The mouth is on the underside of the front point of the triangular head, and is relatively small. It is surrounded to two strong mandibles. The neck is very short but thick and sturdy, and can rotate 60 degrees.

The body of a Thargoid is segmented into two distinct sections. The upper segment is approximately egg-shaped with a slight distension at the upper end just below the junction to the neck and head; this is where the upper limbs join the body. The lower segment is a tapered oval that arcs slightly towards the rear and forms a rounded point. The junction of these two segments is a heavily muscled narrow waist which the Thargoid can twist to approximately 100 degrees.

The lower four limbs are attached to the lower body segment. The lowest pair, or the traditional legs, are attached just above the point where the segment begins to bend rearwards. These legs have knee joints and ankle joint, and are terminated with clawed appendages. The ankles allow the Thargoid to use the lowest part of the limb as feet, providing stability and agility when standing erect. These legs are also double jointed at the knees. The middle pair of limbs are primarily used as manipulating limbs, but are also seen as propelling limbs when a Thargoid is running. These limbs are jointed at elbow and wrist, and end in clawed hands. There are four digits, including an opposable thumb, and these are clawed. The claws are short and horny. These legs are usually held folded against the front of the body.

The upper limbs are dedicated manipulatory limbs. These are jointed at the elbows and wrists. The elbow is jointed to the rear, similar to human arms. The hands end in four clawed digits, one of which is an opposable thumb. These digits are more flexible and agile than the ones on the middle limbs.

Thargoids can walk erect on the hind legs, but have been seen to drop to four legs when running, using the middle limbs in addition to the rear legs.

Not much is known about the internal workings of Thargoid anatomy. Dissection of specimens have revealed the presence of several organs analogous to humans, as well as some that are common in insectoid races. Oresrian medical personnel have verified the presence of respiratory and circulatory organs as well as the digestive organs and system. They have also identified several glands such as excretory, pheromonal and communication glands (most insectoid communication is a hybrid of aural and pheromone methods). The fabled 'fear glands' thought to be removed from Thargoid warriors are thought to be located in the upper thorax, where scar tissue has been found. No notable reproductive organs have been found in specimens, leading scientists to theorize that there must be a separate phenotype of Thargoid that is responsible for the reproductive act.

Society
Not much information has been obtained about Thargoid society or culture. The only known fact is that the society is hive based, with no sense of close family. It is thought that the society is divided into colonies, possibly along the lines of ant colonies.

Thargoids are thought to have a natural affinity with space, and with witchspace in particular. This is due to the fact that Thargoid warriors seem to spend a large amount of time in space. Naval pilots and crews report that the warships in the war zones are encountered on repeated occasions over a period of months often without respite.

Based on the study of some wrecked ships, Thargoids as a race seem to have a very spartan approach to furnishing and belongings. Crew quarters are practically devoid of possessions other than those necessary for military crew. All belongings are functional and necessary.

Politics
Nothing is known about internal Thargoid politics.

Thargoid relations with other races is frighteningly simple: war. The three largest organisations in Galaxy 1 are all at war with the Thargoid race, and they are constantly under threat of planetary invasion.

The Thargoid invasions usually seem to be prompted by the need for either agricultural or mineral resources, rather than a sociological or anthropological need to expand or colonise. In fact, the animal life on an invaded world is largely ignored unless it poses a threat to Thargoids.

Technology
Thargoid technology is vastly different and in many ways far superior to established GalCop technology. The warships have no visible form of propulsion, neither from vented emissions nor engine exhausts, yet they are manoeuvrable and agile.

The Thargoids are also superior in the use of advanced AI and remote craft, an area in which GalCop is sadly behind.

Other fields of technology that the Thargoids are in advance of GalCop, include metallurgy, biogenetics, physics and weapons tech. Their hyperdrives and shield technologies are also superior.

Origins of name
The name 'Thargoid' is believed to have come from the regular skit 'Captain Kremmen' performed by radio and TV personality Kenny Everett on both his radio shows and, in animated form, on TV.

The animated skits show the Thargoids as a race of tall, transparent creatures who are part of a highly-wealthy monarchical society. It is assumed that their main source of income is profiting from the sale of natural resources taken from planets they have colonised stretching billions of light years.
