Silent Running mode can be activated to reduce the visibility of a ship to others, allowing it to remain undetected and making it harder to be targeted.

The visibility of a ship depends on its heat signature - that is the amount of heat that it generates. A high heat signature means that the ship will be easier to see on the sensors of other ships and can be detected from further away.

Heat Management
All powered ship modules (including the reactor) generate heat. When a module's thermal limit is exceeded, heat is transferred from it to the ship’s cooling system which radiates the heat away from the ship via cooling vents. If more heat is being generated than radiated the excess heat will build up in the modules, causing overheating. When heat levels exceed set thresholds some modules may automatically turn off or begin to suffer fatigue damage. Excessive heat puts a strain on the ship’s atmosphere control (reducing the capability of life support modules). Further increase in heat directly impacts the pilot and crew’s ability to function and will eventually kill them.

Most ships have articulated heat vanes which can be raised, significantly increasing heat dissipation from the ship. However, such activity normally affects the flight model of the ship and always increases the ship’s thermal signature whilst active. Heat stored in a ship’s cooling system generates a thermal signature for the ship, a high signature making it easier for other ships to locate using heat-based sensors and for heat-tracking weapons to lock-on.

Engaging Silent Running
When silent running is engaged, shields immediately go offline (and won't recharge until silent running is disengaged), and the cooling vents of the ship shut, preventing any heat from escaping from it. Heat signature dramatically reduces causing the ship to become more difficult to detect on the scanners of any nearby ships. The less heat a ship generates and the farther away it is from another ship the more effective this will be.

Heat generated by any active ship systems and modules starts to build up inside the ship, causing the ship's temperature gauge to rise.

Using systems that generate heat (such as firing energy weapons) while in silent running will cause the ship to show up on other ship's scanners.

The heat signature may be reduced even further while in silent running by switching off additional ship modules (even including life support). The total current heat output of active systems on the ship can be seen on the Modules section of the right-hand systems panel, and individual modules can be switched off and on from this screen.

To go totally dark (i.e. completely off scanner), the ship must generate virtually no heat (to the point where it is so cold that ice forms on the cockpit canopy), with weapons stored in their bays and engines turned off.

Silent running never, by itself, hides a ship completely from the scanner. It will make the ship appear as a "ghost" or "vague" contact though, so people will know something is there but they won't be able to lock on to it.

Heatsinks
Heat Sink Launcher
Heat sink modules can be fitted to hard points. When activated (i.e. fired), a heat sink module flushes the cooling system’s heat into a heat sink which is then ejected from the ship. This will cause a blip to be generated on the scanners of any nearby ships. Ejected heat sinks can also be used as a form of chaff to confuse heat tracking missiles.

Additional Notes
(This info needs to be cleaned up and the info put into the above...)

From Sandro Sammarco (Lead Designer- Elite: Dangerous)

Just thought maybe I could help out with explaining "rigged for silent running".

Ship heat: As you power draw increases (from turning on modules that require power), your power plant generates heat inside the ship. This is represented by the heat bar to the left of your sensor disc.

The effects of heating up your ship are that eventually some systems might shut down and the ship will start taking damage - effectively cooking itself.

Separately from this, your ship has a signature, which describes how visible you are to other ship's sensors. As heat is radiated out, your signature increases. This radiation rate is not the same as your internal ship heat, though obviously there is a direct connection. The hotter your ship is, the more heat it's radiators put out, and the bigger its signature.

When you rig for silent running, you close off your ship's radiators. Your ship still generates heat and cooks, but to other vessels it appears cold. As part of silent running you also turn off shields as the context is that these effectively radiate heat directly.

So how does signature work? Well, the smaller your signature, the closer a ship has to be before its sensors will detect you as a fuzzy contact (where the sensor marker flickers and moves around) and then as a resolved contact.

You can gain a similar benefit that silent running gives you by manually turning off modules. Your power plant runs cooler so less heat is generated and radiated. However, unless you basically turn off everything (including life support) the effect will be less effective.

There are two caveats to silent running benefits:

A) when your ship gets very close to another vessel its sensors will be able to detect you even if you are rigged for silent running. This auto-resolve distance is normally around two to three hundred metres.

B) ships can be fitted with more powerful sensors that increase the distance that they can detect you, and that can push the auto-resolve distance out to around five hundred metres or more (good sensors are the silent runner's worst nightmare).

All this being said, silent running can be used during combat, but it's a very dangerous gambit. Missiles, turrets and gimbal-mounted weapons *do* use signature to determine when they can lock on, so going silent can often make them lose lock until you are very close. In fact, if you rig for silent running and you're not within auto resolve distance then an aggressor will not even be able to target you to check your shield/hull status.

Silent running is certainly most effective at range, of course, out beyond the auto-resolve distance.

It's also important to note that we specifically did not want a "cloak" stealth ability that was indefinite, which is why silent running has various limitations.

The PAGENAME is one of the three major powers in the universe, the other two being the Federation and the Alliance. The Imperial Palace, seat of the Emperor, is situated on Capitol in the Achenar system.

Although a peace treaty has existed between the Empire and the Federation since 2382AD, there have never really been any peaceful relations between these two old enemies. The Empire despises the Federation and everything it stands for, and vice-versa.

The Empire is less technologically dependent than the Federation, choosing to keep and employ slaves for the work which machines would usually perform in other parts of the universe. The Empire is also a proponent of human cloning, a topic which the other factions find abhorrent and have officially banned within their own jurisdictions.

Imperial society is based on a "cliens" system - much like ancient Rome - and strictly stratified, with people being able to move between strata based on money, patronage and influence. It values both status and honour very highly. Whilst it is acceptable to flaunt wealth, treating people well is a question of honour - and this includes slaves. Having an unpaid debt is seen as utterly dishonourable - an honourable Imperial citizen would sell themselves into slavery to clear a debt they couldn't otherwise afford.

The Imperial Law is seen and enforced by Senators who themselves are above the law. They can order executions, and can even kill people themselves, though sometimes (rarely) they may be held to account for their actions by the Emperor. In the Empire very little is illegal, but many things are frowned upon, like excessive use of narcotics.

Imperial design puts an emphasis on the glamorous, glorious, and aesthetically beautiful, with extravagance in abundance. Everything in the Empire looks impressive, from their cities, to their ships, right down to the clothes worn by Imperial subjects.
Permits
Permits are required to access certain systems that are otherwise locked out by the computer of your Frame Shift Drive (FSD).

Such permits are rewarded by the controlling faction for that locked system, when you become friendly with that faction, by accomplishing missions such as "Imperial dispatch" and receiving ranks. You can often find that faction on a station outside the main system they control.

Once finished several dispatch quests, simply visit the Bulletin Board at any of the faction's stations to accept a job titled "Imperial invitation". Accepting the job automatically adds the permit to your FSD computer.
Pre-History
Marlin Duval, who was an architect of peace and an anti-Federation activist, circa 2300AD. She was notorious for speaking out against the harsh Federal administration which oppressed society. Such was her disenchantment that she gathered her family together, along with many supporters, and left the Federation. Marlin led them to a distant star system called Achenar, many light years from Sol, in order to start a new colony that would follow more peaceful ways.

The colony started off extremely well, and an administrative council was formed with Marlin at the head, in order to fairly distribute power throughout the colony. As the colony expanded, so did the council, with a determination that any and every situation was dealt with via peaceful methods and dialogue. This arrangement worked very well indeed and the colony continued to prosper.

Alas, a few years later Marlin Duval was killed in a shuttle accident, in which her partner and children also perished. The accident was shrouded in controversy and happened under very suspicious circumstances.

History
Henson Duval, brother of Marlin Duval, took over the existing colony's administration almost immediately after his sister's death. Henson's first act was to disband the council and assume sole responsibility for the leadership of the Achenar colony. Henson then began to fervently denounce Marlin's vision for peace, and turn the focus and motivation of the colony away from its peaceful roots. Such was his passion and power of persuasion that he succeeded in converting the capricious colonists to his doctrines in a remarkably short period of time. During this period many requests were made, to Achenar from the Federation, for the colony to join them, all of which were flatly refused. Henson's vision of an Empire was finally realised when he announced that the leadership of the colony, and any affiliated systems, would be passed down from father to son. With that mandate the Empire was born, circa 2314AD.

Some years later, Henson ordered the sterilisation of Achenar 6d, in order to make it the homeworld of the Empire, which resulted in the extinction of a sentient race indigenous to that planet. This, and Henson's perpetual attempts to convert nearby systems to membership of his fledgling Empire, enraged the Federation into sending a massive battle fleet to Achenar in order to end this new regime. The Federation surprisingly suffered a stinging defeat at the hands of the Empire.

With this victory, worlds that had previously been approached by Henson Duval, and initially refused his offers, now willingly gave their allegiance, abandoning the Federation in favour of the new, and mighty, Empire. As a result the Empire began to expand and grow, exponentially.

Lore
{{quote|Arguably the most powerful person in the galaxy, Emperor Hengist Duval, is sick.

He has ruled the Empire now for 67 years since his coronation in 3233 following the death of his father, Hesketh Duval.

Emperor Hengist is only 118, born only a week before the death of his grandfather, Hender Saik Duval. Some say Hender’s spirit had already transferred to Hengist at that time.

The Duval Imperial line has been unbroken for almost a thousand years. There have been power struggles in the past, but the usurpers have been successfully dealt with behind closed doors.

This time is different.

Hengist has been not involved himself in politics for a long time, relying on his Chancellor, Senator Blaine and has taken a laissez faire attitude towards a handful of increasingly powerful and ambitious Senators whilst Harold, the current heir, quickly made a name for himself as a feckless playboy.

The warlike Senator Denton Patreus, last seen trying to destabilise the Eranin system during the conflict surrounding its 30th Anniversary of Independence from the Federation, continues his manipulative power-broking in the galaxy at large.

The preposterously rich Senator Zemina Torval is using her slaver corporation supporters and personal fleet of Majestic-class Interdictors to suppress revolts and to further her ambitions.

Commentators expect others to show their hand, too.

Much like in Imperial Rome on ancient Earth, Senators determine the tax rates of their supporters and both Patreus and Torval have become hugely popular back home as they have each used their huge wealth to lower taxation to zero.

There is a real prospect of the next Emperor not being a Duval. And the bitter fight for succession is about to spill out into the open.

Meanwhile, the Federation and Alliance of Independent Systems are watching with keen interest.

On 16 December, the first shockwaves from this battle for the Imperial succession will finally hit the galaxy at large.
