The Sidewinder MkI, built by Faulcon DeLacy, is a superb multipurpose ship suitable for any role. It is inexpensive - free, in fact - and can be used for light transport and combat duties.

Its manoeuvrability makes it an excellent choice for both green and experienced pilots. The Sidewinder is a dependable vessel that will get you where you need to go, safe and sound.

Uses the Spin Ionic MV.

Overview
The Sidewinder is the default craft offered throughout the game. The player starts in one, and if at any time their ship is destroyed they can get a free Sidewinder if they can't or don't want to replace their previous ship. New players who still struggle with learning the game, may find themselves flying in a Sidewinder for a longer time or going back to it often.

Although the Sidewinder is cheap, it is not harmless; it is among the top when it comes to manoeuvrability compared to other ships. In particular, it can out-turn most other ships, being topped in that category only by the Eagle, Vulture, and Imperial Courier, and has solid lateral thrust.

It is, however, one of the slowest-moving and weakest-hulled ships in the game; only the Anaconda and certain pure trade ships have slower maximum speeds, and only the Eagle has a weaker hull (but makes up for it with stronger shields.)

The Sidewinder is therefore an acceptable ship in a (figurative) knife-fight, but lacks firepower. When flying one, using its excellent turning to lock opponents into circling matches, and burning away opposite of the enemy to escape are advised tactics. When fighting a Sidewinder, keep it at range and lay down heavy fire if the current ship can't outmanoeuvre it, and it should be destroyed quickly; with a ship that can keep up with its turning, close in and blast away, making sure to stay away from its front.

The weapon hardpoints are located as follows: 2 small hardpoints in front of cockpit on upper surface of ship.

The Sidewinder MkI has an available 16 piece cosmetic ship kit that can be purchased from the Frontier store which allows you to "remodel your ship in your personal style". The ship kit does not affect gameplay.

Purchase Locations
The Sidewinder can be purchased at nearly any shipyard.

The Imperial Fighter, also known as the Gu-97 Fighter, is the standard Empire small-class single man ship. It is as noted for its high manoeuvrability and firepower as it is for its low shielding and range. It is typically launched as support craft for an imperial cruiser, and is useless on its own if outflanked or outnumbered. It is most commonly seen in conflict zones which include an imperial faction, or patrolling space stations in imperial territory.

The Imperial Fighter is currently accessible in Close Quarters Combat, and was added as a Ship-Launched Fighter alongside the F63 Condor and Taipan Fighter in the Elite Dangerous: Horizons 2.2 update.

Variants
Like the F63 Condor and Taipan, the Imperial Fighter is available in 5 variants, which differ only in weapons and utility slot.
A standard docking computer is a ship module that automates docking with a space station. The process can be slow so it is not recommended for pilots who need to dock quickly.

<p style="color: red; text-align: center;">-Warning- Docking Computers have been reportedly buggy resulting in the destruction of player ships. Use at your own risk.</p>

Uses
They are unreliable in the current version of the game.

Docking computer can be used with any ship and might be especially handy for players who find the docking process to be hard or don't want to keep doing it every time they dock. It is very useful to dock larger ships too, as those require more precise maneuvering.

The docking computer is automatically activated when docking permission is granted. If the ship is moving a message will appear to slow down before the docking computer will take control of the ship. When the throttle is set to zero or if the ship was initially stopped, the docking computer will begin maneuvering the ship. To cancel the auto-docking computer sequence and hand control back to the pilot, put power to forward thrusters.

Note: Docking computers are generally significantly less efficient than a pilot with some experience. They also tend to have trouble if anything bumps you, especially as you pass through the docking port. Generally they are reliable, but will sometimes cut out once inside the station leaving you to manually traverse to your pad.
